The Villa Saint Michel of Carnac Plage !!!

I came back to check out one of our favorite hangouts here, Carnac. On Carnac ,plenty written on it in my blog, this is some interesting pictures found in my cd rom vaults that feel needs to be in my blog for you and me, Briefly, the town of Carnac is indeed two. There is Carnac bourg or city center inland ,and there is Carnac plage or beach (see pic), along the ocean where the beaches are of course. Both are about 2 km away. Oh yes this is south of me about 30 minutes in my beautiful Morbihan dept 56 of my lovely Bretagne  and in my belle France! Therefore, here is my take on the Villa Saint Michel of Carnac Plage !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Villa Saint-Michel was modeled after the Neo-Norman and Neo-Breton villa styles. Like other villas, Villa Saint-Michel was built at the end of the 19C, when Carnac-Plage was still a relatively new town. The villa is at Boulevard de la Plage. The resort of Carnac-Plage is a creation of the 1900s, made possible by the development of a dune system and marshland.

Seaside resorts appeared in France as early as the 1830s; the development of tourism attracted an affluent clientele to the coast, drawn to the picturesque setting and local rural cultures. This led to the spread, at the turn of the 20C, of regionalist architectural styles: Neo-Breton, Neo-Basque, and Neo-Norman. Each style, far from remaining fixed on its own characteristics, is associated with other forms produced by Art Nouveau and Art Deco from the 1900s onwards, or inherited from a recent past interested in reinterpreting the Romanesque and Gothic vocabulary.

In Carnac Plage, the models such as the manor houses of Villa Saint-Michel, and Manoir Mané-Ty-Gouard or the traditional Breton house of villa Saint-Erwan, the revisited Norman or Basque villa, find their expression according to the ambitions of the project owners and the tastes of the clients, Some other villas such as Villa Les Troènes, 55, Avenue de Kermario. Bureau de la Société Anonyme de Carnac-Plage. 1907, Villa Ker Margaët, Allée des Menhir. 1905-1910 47, boulevard de la Plage. Villa Ker Yonnick and its extension in two stages of 1924. Villa Beauséjour, allées des Menhirs. from 1905-10.Villa la Korigane, 16, boulevard de la Plage. 1918. Villa Les Tamaris, 45, boulevard de la Plage. And villa Velléda 1914, and villa la Korigane 1914,

In the Gothic forms, arches, crenellated turrets, mullioned windows, are sometimes boldly reinterpreted such as in the Manoir Mané-Ty-Gouard, or Villa Churchill, Villa Saint-Erwan, circa 1902. 58, Boulevard de la Plage, Originating from the half-timbered peasant house of Normandy, the neo-Norman style permeated local landscapes during the Belle Epoque from the early years of the 20C before generating a strong enthusiasm throughout France, starting with seaside towns. With the villas at 5 and 7 Avenue Miln, the architect showcases the Art Deco vocabulary with wide windows with reinforced concrete gusset lintels, wrought iron railings while remaining faithful to neo-Breton models like dormer windows, rusticated granite and exposed stonework. These are the Villa L’Escale, Villa Mané-Bihan 27, avenue de Kermario, and at 24, avenue de Port-en-Drô. As a general rule, villas built between 1930 and 1940 are of the neo-Basque type with large gables facing the street, the spread of which on a local scale began around 1905. The enthusiasm for this regionalist type appeared in Carnac around 1930.

There are still about 25 old villas stand apart from the architectural styles adopted in the 1900s of two-tone bricks, polychrome friezes, and the 1930s Art Deco and Basque styles. Starting in 1900, the first villas of Carnac Plage were built on the dune. Constructed of “Carnac granite” according to the plans of the architect Désirée Jamet, these holiday homes were equipped with all the necessary comforts, including gardens and individual freshwater cisterns. The aristocracy and the bourgeoisie found Carnac-Plage to be a preferred holiday destination. Operational from July 1901, the railway line was a great success. The construction of the Grand Hotel, inaugurated in 1903, officially marked the opening of the seaside resort. A hub for meetings and entertainment, the accommodation located in the center of the beach has been offering climatic treatments since 1920 that were precursors to thalassotherapy. Since 1953, the building has been a holiday home for the works council of Crédit Lyonnais bank (LCL).
