This one again was a picture found in my cd rom vault that made me do this post for you and me. This is of course, my dear Madrid. One of the nice things about Madrid is that even if lived there and visit every year, there is always something new to see; the city has a load of wonderful monuments. Therefore, let me tell you a bit on the Parroquia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora of Madrid !! Hope you enjoy the post as I.
The Parroquia de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora or the Parrish of the Assumption of Our Lady is located at 17 Calle Gabriel y Galán , with its main façade and portico on Calle Ramón y Cajal (see pic), proudly displays this heritage. Generations of Christians have made it possible for the parish to be “the human place” where the experience of encountering Christ is lived. The parish complex occupies an entire city block bordered by Avenida de Ramón y Cajal and the streets Gustavo Fernández Balbuena, Gabriel y Galán, and Móstoles. The church consists of a large nave in the shape of a Latin cross, which houses the church, and a series of adjoining rooms. The main entrance, located on Avenida de Ramón y Cajal, features a wide granite staircase leading to a covered atrium flanked by columns. Inside, the church is austere and functional, but the most striking feature is the imposing mosaic standing 16 meters high and covers the front of the presbytery, displaying a full spectrum of color from the small tesserae that make up this magnificent work. The mosaic depicts the Assumption of Our Lady as the central figure, surrounded by angels who accompany her on her ascent to the Holy Trinity, represented by the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Today, the impressive church houses a splendid mural in the presbytery, a work by the School of Juan de Ávalos depicting the parish’s patron saint. The vault and side aisles feature recently painted, modern stained-glass windows, creating a mosaic of light and inviting contemplation. The image of the Virgen Milagrosa or Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal stands out in the side chapel near the presbytery, a devotion brought by the Daughters of Charity of the Santamarca Foundation, located within the parish’s territory. Incidentally, the Santamarca Foundation receives pastoral care from the parish. This community, spread across the urban area, has a predominantly middle-aged congregation, with elderly residents who have fostered a close-knit, family-like atmosphere in the neighborhood. The parish has three communities of consecrated life: the Hermanas de la Virgen María del Monte Carmelo ( Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel), the Hospitalarias del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús ( Hospitaller Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus), and the Operarias Catequistas de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores.( Catechist Workers of Our Lady of Sorrows).
A bit of history I like tell us that the history of this parish begins with a small, humble chapel belonging to the housing estate that the Unión Eléctrica Madrileña company built for its employees under the Cheap Housing Act. It was around 1941, thanks to the good offices the parish reorganization of post-war Madrid, that the decree creating the parish was made public on January 2nd, at the request of the residents of the Ciudad Jardín, Unión Eléctrica, and Fomento neighborhoods and housing developments.The construction of one hundred homes by the Madrid-based Unión Eléctrica company, under the so-called Cheap Housing Law, was completed in 1923. In addition to the homes, there was a school and a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the original image of which is located on the side of the entrance to the current church. The housing development, incidentally, was inaugurated by King Alfonso XIII in 1924. Years later, in March 1952, the temporary chapel was inaugurated in the parish complex, pending the completion of the temple that can be seen today, something that happened at Easter in 1963.
