The Château de Crévy of La Chapelle Caro !!!

Let me bring you back to my beautiful Morbihan dept 56 of my lovely region of Bretagne in my belle France.  The views, sights are indeed endless here and I am doing my best to introduce you to the off the beaten paths of my Brittany. This castle is located in La Chapelle Caro, however, since 2016, it is now part of the town of Val d’Oust which was created from the merger of towns of Le Roc-Saint-André, Quily, and La Chapelle-Caro.(see posts), Therefore, here is my take on the Château de Crévy of La Chapelle Caro !!! Hope you enjoy this post as I

The Château de Crévy is a former feudal manor house dating from the 14C. The castle is privately owned, and not open to the public, but the exterior is visible, from which I took the picture, and glad to find it in my cd rom vault to do this post for you and me. The oldest remains of the current castle, the keep and the isolated corner tower date back to the 14C or 15C. Today, the chapel is destroyed, as are the ramparts that surrounded the castle; the castle underwent significant restorations between 1970 and 1980: roofing of the main building and the small towers, renovation of the 75 doors and windows, repair of the timber frame of the large tower, which had collapsed in 1970, restoration of the floors, ceilings, and various decorative elements, etc.

The main building dates from the 17C. ; it is adjoined by a large 14C tower and a formal granite staircase, along with several outbuildings. The western section, including two turrets and an entrance, was rebuilt in the 19C under Charles X in the Gothic style. Also remaining from the 14C are an isolated tower and the foundations of two other towers supporting the northern terrace or situated within the moats. For several centuries, the castle played a crucial role in the defense of Brittany, due to its location on the road from Rennes to Vannes and the waterway from Brest to Nantes. It distinguished itself in 1591 and 1592 by resisting the troops of Henry IV. The earliest recorded owners date back to 1149.

This is an ancient Roman oppidum (fortified settlement). Successively owned by several prominent Breton families, the lordship was elevated to a county in 1697. The castle was at the heart of the conflict during the Wars of Religion between the Catholic Malestroit family and the Protestant Rohan de Josselin family. The Duke of Mercœur had a garrison there; the king’s forces tried in vain to seize it. The castle was extensively remodeled in the 18C and again in 1855, and once again in 1966.
