I never stop to be amaze of my beautiful Morbihan and now Unesco World Heritage site, I am glad to have found me again pictures in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, This is Carnac in my beautiful Morbihan , and lovely region of Brittany, and in my belle France. I come here often as close to home to be near the ocean and the beautiful beach and bars (see posts), Therefore, let me tell you again on the menhir Géant du Manio of Carnac !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I
The géant du Manio or Giant of Manio is a menhir located north of the Manio alignment, about 50 meters south of the Manio quadrilateral. It is made of a single block of granite. At 6.5 meters tall, it is the largest menhir in Carnac. It owes its name to its shape, which resembles a head, and this shape has led to the suggestion that it may have been slightly taller but was broken by lightning, with the fallen pieces having since been reused.

Isolated, it is located outside the Carnac alignments,(see posts), but a forest path provides access in a few minutes on foot from the Kerlescan alignment. It may have been placed there to indicate the presence of a nearby burial ground. Indeed, a few meters from the Giant is the Manio Quadrilateral. These small, joined stones placed at ground level and forming a rectangle probably mark the location of a tomb, now very eroded, but dating from the same period as the menhir. We have very little information, but it is possible that this tomb contained several burials.
The Manio quadrilateral corresponds to the enclosure of an ancient tumulus. It is located 45 meters north of the menhir known as the Giant of Manio. The Manio tumulus is trapezoidal in shape: it measures 35 meters long by 11 meters wide on the western side and 16 meters wide on the eastern side. The interior of the tumulus consists of a series of circular mounds joined together. Each mound is delimited by granite slabs and blocks placed contiguously and embedded in a layer of imported clay forming a kind of base. In its highest part, the tumulus is surmounted by a menhir measuring more than 4 meters in height, of which 3.50 meters are above ground. The Manio quadrilateral is approximately 300 meters to the north, the Kerlescan tumulus is a little less than 600 meters to the northeast, and there was a similar tumulus 40 meters to the northwest ,including a burial chamber covered with a 2-meter-long slab which is now destroyed. The entire complex may have constituted a necropolis.
