The Church Saint Pierre of Plougastel-Daoulas, exteriors !!!

If you read my blog, you know we came here on our road warrior trips to know Plougastel-Daoulas and were surprise. We like this little town and the resto we had lunch so much we came back an even celebrated my boys birthdays there!! However, plenty already in my blog, this one is on the Church Saint Pierre of Plougastel-Daoulas, exteriors !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The town of Plougastel-Daoulas is in the dept 29 of Finistère in my lovely Bretagne, and in my belle France. It is a town in the Brest harbor, located on a peninsula in the southeast of the city, which is separated by the mouth of the Élorn. The town is part of the former bishopric of Cornouaille. It is located 13 km from Brest, and Landerneau, 62 km from Quimper, and 151 km from my current home from where we came along the N165 voie express road bear right into the exit/sortie D329 and around the round point get back over the N165 to next round point bear right into the D33 to City centre Plougastel-Daoulas.

The first that you see upon coming to town is the Church Saint Pierre (Peter) rising above the place de l’église, The parish ,once a priory dependent on the abbey of Daoulas,(see post) dating from the 15C, but then too small, was destroyed in 1870 and replaced by a church of Flamboyant Gothic style at a site of a chapel.  The initiative probably comes back to the Lords of Léon and the family of Rohan. The church was completed in 1623 with a 28 meters high bell tower in a round turret containing the staircase to access the bells.  A Renaissance porch is added between 1640 and 1650. It was destroyed by WWII  and it was rebuilt with the bell tower done with concrete.

The Church Saint Pierre was rebuilt on the site of a 17C chapel, between 1870 and 1872 ; the western facade bears the date 1871, It is done on a Latin cross plan with three naves. Flat chevet. Openwork crossing tower covered with a concrete pavilion roof. Bell tower with gallery and openwork bell chamber, cushioned by a concrete spire, openwork and with crosslets. North and south porches outside the work at the level of the third bay. Dark nave with five bays. Chancel with three bays. Nave: pointed arch arcades resting on the capitals of the engaged colonnettes of the pillars.

Inspired by 13C cathedrals and local references, it is in neo-Gothic style. Measuring 56 meters long and 30 meters wide, these dimensions earn it a place among the ten largest churches in Finistère. Located at the heart of the 1944 bombings, the roofs and the bell tower of the church were destroyed. Reconstruction work was carried out between 1945 and 1959 in the context and urgency of the post-war period. The renovated bell tower of the Church Saint Pierre was inaugurated on Saturday, September 21, 2024.
