The Church Notre Dame de la Fosse of Guémené sur Scorff !!

The town of Guémené sur Scorff is in my beautiful Morbihan and lovely Bretagne. Another off the beaten path place with pretty architecture of its monuments. This is a return visit and expand on its Church Notre Dame de la Fosse! See my other post with more on history.  The town is about 43 km from my house, Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The wonderful small Church Notre Dame de la Fosse, from the 19C and  rebuilt around 1820. The former bell tower dates from the 18C and collapsed in 1757 stood near the present Church, housing the four bells. The Church Notre Dame de la Fosse of Guémené sur Scorff. It owes this name to the pit or moat that separates it from the castle. Built for the service of the castle and the city, it was not parochial, but it depended on the rector of Locmalo.

This church’s is square and surmounted by a dome, whose construction was decided by the Guémené-sur-Scorff factory in 1761, and replaced a former collegiate church of the 14C who disappeared during the French revolution. A college of canons was founded in 1529 by Mary and Louis IV de Rohan, the Lords of Guémené. The choir of the Church is enlarged in the 16C to accommodate the chapter (six canons) and stalls are installed. Stalls are reworked in 1932 and only remain today the sculpted panels. These sculpted panels now adorn the side altars and are the only remnants of the former collegiate church.

The church then included: the choir, reserved for the canons, the chapel of Saint-Jacques, the chapel of Saint-Yves, and the nave serving the faithful; there was moreover along the nave the large chapel of Saint-Antoine de Padoue, and at the bottom of this chapel the tower of the church. The town will celebrate the 266th pardon of Notre-Dame-de-la-Fosse. The first pardon was celebrated in 1753, so long before the andouille festival which has since been associated with the pardon. It was after 1,000 years of living together with Locmalo that Guémené in 1802 was canonically erected as a parish . In 1825, the current church was completed and built on the same site as the collegiate with probably the same stones.

Afterward, went to the university in Florida, ERAU, and upon graduation decided to moved there to Ormond by the Sea, near Daytona Beach, finally moving North Miami, then Hialeah, then another moved to Silver Lakes division in Miramar, Broward county, Florida; in Florida I lived a total of 18 years. Finally , moved to France in 2003 ,Versailles call me for its royalty, and working in Paris was great. It was time to seek frontiers again and moved to Brech near Auray, Morbihan in Brittany , and later move to not too far Pluvigner. Total so far in France has been 20 years, and counting.
