The Cable car of Brest!!

This is an unique opportunity to see Brest from above and have a wonderful ride on its two sides. I have written on public transports here before but feels the cable car or téléphérique should have a post of its own for its uniqueness. For location, Brest is in the dept Finistére no 29 of the lovely region of Bretagne in my belle France.

The téléphérique de Brest  base is at 50 Rue de Siam and it is part of the line C of the local transport network call Bibus , It links the two banks of the river Penfeld that separates the districts of Siam and Capucins. It is the first of its kind in France and started in 2016. Each of its cabins can transport up to 60 persons at the same time. It is capable to withstand winds of up to 108 kph and equipped with cabins offering a capacity equivalent to half a bus each.

The cable car will cover a distance of 430 meters above the Penfeld and the military arsenal, at a maximum height of 70 meters, in order to allow the passage of the buildings of the French Navy. Two cabins with a total capacity of 60 seats will transport passengers every five minutes, for an estimated journey time of approximately three minutes.

A bit of history I like

The city of Brest is cut in two by the Penfeld, a coastal river passing through the bottom of a valley occupied by the military arsenal, access to which is closed to the public. This configuration forms a strong urban break between the two banks because only two bridges allow the crossing of the river, the Recouvrance bridge,(see post) designed to be able to let ships pass, and the Harteloire bridge further north. The construction of the station on the right bank, in the heart of the Ateliers des Capucins, took place from July 2015 to March 2016, while the pylon was assembled between October 2015 and February 2016, The first cabin was presented to the public in April 2016, for three days, placed on the ground at the bottom of the Rue de Siam, then stored at the tram’s operations and maintenance center until its installation. It is placed on its cables on August 17, 2016, and the second cabin is installed in turn on September 6, The line, the first in France in an urban environment, is inaugurated on November 19, 2016.
