Curiosities of Saint Malo, part I !!!

This is a must town to visit in my belle France. I have heard for a long time and finally an English friend who lives there, invited over to have lunch, so we went. It has continue to amazed us and continue to visit thereafter several times with plenty in my blog. However, looking into my vault of pictures saw some not in my blog yet so here is my rendition to the curiosities of Saint Malo, part I !!! Hope you enjoy it as I.

The city center/ downtown with the historic city (old Saint-Malo), the city (old Alet) and the port, is formed by a complex coastline, with numerous reefs and marshes immersed in high tide, underwater tombolos, visible at the low tides of vivid waters , by islands or islets, many of which were fortified in the 17-18C such as Cézembre, Fort Harbour, fort de la Conchée, Grande Bé and Le Petit Bé, and the island of the Fort National. Saint-Malo is an active trading port, the second largest trading port in Brittany. It is composed of four basins, the Vauban basin, the Duguay-Trouin basin, the Jacques-Cartier basin and the Bouvet Basin. The port of Saint-Malo on passenger service to or from Great Britain, Ireland, Jersey or guernsey. The avant-port of Saint-Malo has two recent and efficient ferries terminals, the Naye Ferry terminal and then the Bourse terminal. Four lighthouses mark the various access channels: The Grand jardin, the Balue, the Bas-Sablons and Rochebonne.

The district house or Maison du Quartier Rocabey ,7 Rue Jules Ferry, This is one district close to center that is worth the walk, and we are glad we did, Rocabey is a district of Saint-Malo. This district, with an urban landscape and a lively atmosphere, has undergone lots of new construction of major facilities such as the TGV station, the intermodal hub, the Grande Passerelle, the future Maritime History Museum (2023) on the quays or even the creation of an urban park at the Plateau des Anglais,

The district of Rocabey cemetery is the main cemetery of Saint-Malo.It houses the graves of many local personalities: privateers like Robert Surcouf, shipowners, politicians like Charles Guernier, Guy La Chambre, Henri Arondel or Charles Rouxin (mayor of Saint-Malo), soldiers like General François Lefranc, as well as actor Daniel Gélin. Founded in 1779 on a plot called Clos-à-Pihuit, it is located on avenue de MokaAt the nice rue du Calvaire you have the HQ of the National Police , Ministry of the Interior (not the place you wanted be or enter ,,,) near the Plage du Sillon beach

A Calvary is located at the crossroads of Chaussée du Sillon and rue du Calvaire. It is made up of a metal cross as are the statues. Inaugurated on March 15, 1774, it was destroyed during the French revolution and raised during the Restoration. On a high stylobate, three pedestals support the metal cross as well as the statues of the Mother of Pain and Saint John. It was inaugurated on March 9, 1855.

The Esplanade Robert Surcouf has a statue of Robert Surcouf near porte de Dinan, Intramuros, Robert Surcouf practiced racing war against English commerce. His most famous feat was the capture of Kent, a powerful vessel of the English Company of the Indies. The capture of this 1,200-ton vessel earned it the title of King of the Corsairs. Surcouf then became one of the richest and most powerful shipowners in Saint-Malo.  Robert Surcouf’s bronze statue is located in the jardin du Cavalier garden, facing Petit-Bé and Grand-Bé islands. Surcouf, dressed in his privateer outfit, indicates the procedure to follow by turning his head to face his troops. Here is my rendition of curiosity in the game of boules breton similar to petanque…

By Rue Abbé Huchet not far from the National Police HQ as above , The major project to mark the 50th anniversary of the unification of the three districts of Saint-Malo. It was decided to bring together the three war memorials, in a single place, in Rocabey. About 750 m2 are devoted to the three monuments grouped together in six granite stelae, a green wall and a green space delimit the site. At the center of the monuments, a remembrance flame is installed that can be lit during ceremonies. The Saint-Servan war memorial was inaugurated on August 6, 1922. Erected on the Place du Maréchal Leclerc (formerly Place Carnot), it was then moved to the foot of the semaphore and the garden of Bel-Air. Near the monument, there is a statue of a weeping widow. Two stelae were added to the monument after WWII. The Intra Muros war memorial dates from 1923. Erected at the Place des Frères Lamennais, it was dismantled in 1998 during the construction of the underground car park and placed in the enclosure of the Resistance. A widow and a child are at the foot of the monument. Paramé’s war memorial dates from July 1923. At its foot stands a woman with her head bowed.
