The Laiterie de la Reine in the Château de Rambouillet !!!

This is one of those town we came for the history we read and passing nearby many times on the N10 , we decided finally to see the castle ,and what wonderful property that needs to be seen more even by me. Rambouillet is a nice town, very much visited later on while living in Versailles. I found me new pics in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me. For reference, Rambouillet is in my dear Yvelines dept 78 of the region of Île de France in my belle France! Therefore, here is my take on the Laiterie de la Reine in the Château de Rambouillet !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Laiterie de la Reine, a little farm adore by Marie Antoinette, all in the middle of an English garden. All done with tiles and marble with a dome ,open every day see same webpage as the castle above. The laiterie de la Reine or the Queen’s dairy was built by Louis XVI to keep Marie Antoinette at Rambouillet while he indulged in hunting. Its neoclassical interior is designed as a grotto with a flowing fountain.

It is June 26, 1787: the Queen passes through a gate flanked by two rustic-looking pavilions. She enters the heart of a charming menagerie, giving the place the air of a small farm. Inside, the wonder continues: a monumental grotto, an exceptional collection of sculptures, mahogany furniture in the latest fashion, and a porcelain service of the highest quality! The Queen’s Dairy thus takes the form of a veritable temple with its banded columns and segmental arched pediment. The purity of the lines and the simplicity of the architecture are characteristic of the Neoclassical movement. Inside, it comprises two rooms. The first, dedicated to the tasting of dairy products, is reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome with its circular plan, coffered dome, and zenithal lighting. Four medallions sculpted by Pierre Julien adorn the room. They present young women dressed in ancient style and engaged in activities specific to the farm (sheep shearing, cow milking, etc.).

The second room is awe-inspiring. Rectangular in plan, covered with a coffered barrel vault, it opens onto a grotto in which water used to flow. The grotto is a recurring theme in the Neoclassical repertoire. It evokes the sanctuary of the nymphs, straight out of Greco-Roman myths! Inside the grotto stands a sculpture in the round, depicting Amalthea and Jupiter’s goat. On either side of the room, two long panels sculpted in low and high relief also illustrate two scenes from mythology: Jupiter as a child among the Corybantes and Apollo tending Admetus’s flock.
