Again, pictures found in my cd rom vaults that should be in my blog for you and me, This is in the hilly quant town ,and worth the detour me think, The town of Vaux-sur-Seine is located in my dear former Yvelines department no 78 along the Seine river in the Île-de-France region of my belle France. Therefore, let me tell you a bit on the Church Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens of Vaux sur Seine !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I

The town of Vaux sur Seine borders Meulan-en-Yvelines, Évecquemont, Menucourt, Boisemont, and Triel-sur-Seine, and is separated by the Seine from Verneuil-sur-Seine and Les Mureaux. The town is crossed by the busy D190 road, which connects Poissy to Mantes-la-Jolie. The town is located 16 km from Saint-Germain-en-Laye , 37 km from La Défense, 8 km from Verneuil-sur-Seine, 46 km from Paris, 35 km from Versailles, and 467 km from my current home, I always came here from Versailles along the Rue de la Paroisse right on Bd du Roi at Place de la Loi turn left onto the Bd Saint Antoine continue on Route de Saint Germain or D181 road continue on Route de Versailles or N186 highway to continue onto the A13 autoroute de Normandie dir Rouen continue thru exit/sortie 8 Les Mureaux to get on the D43 road continue thru City center Les Mureaux on Avenue Paul Raoult to cross the Seine river twice on the pont Rhin et Danube , already in Meulan-en-Yvelines, then bear right on Quai Albert Joly then bear left onto Place Brigitte Gros and a quick right onto Rue Gambetta or D190 road same road changes name but continue on the D190 road here call Rue du Général de Gaulle then bear left onto rue de l’église cross the railroad tracks road becomes the rue du Château to the church and parking, The castle is next door ,see post !

The Church Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens, on Rue du Château, is the only remaining vestige of the Romanesque western portal of the first parish church, founded in 1154. From the late 12C onwards, the old chapel, remodeled during the establishment of the parish, was successively replaced by the current Gothic church. The construction began with the apse, characterized by its semicircular chancel, and ended with the nave, which was originally flanked by two side aisles vaulted to the same height. This is also a distinctive feature of the church of Vaux. Its remarkable stylistic homogeneity, apart from later alterations, and the care taken in its decoration are quite remarkable. However, the church apparently suffered significant damage during the Hundred Years’ War. Restored in 1970, the Church Saint-Pierre és Liens nevertheless retains enough authentic elements to allow us to get an idea of what it was like in the 13C, and its chancel in particular is of great interest.

The Church Saint-Pierre és Liens western facade, which faces away from the village, is divided into two parts. The right-hand section corresponds to the nave of the previous church at the time the parish was established. The portal, located in the right-hand section, is the only notable element of the facade. It was largely buried until the 1970 restoration, and access was then via a side portal on the south side of the nave. This Romanesque portal has a semicircular arch and a triple archivolt. Inside you can see a polychrome wooden Virgin and Child, measuring 99 cm in height (about 3 feet) can be dated to the late 16C thanks to its headdress, which is characteristic of the time of Marie de Medici. The church also houses two other statues, dating from the 18C. One depicts an unidentified saint, without attributes, and which has almost entirely lost its polychromy. The other represents Saint Roch with his faithful dog, which brought him bread when he was afflicted with the plague. The saint wears a wide-brimmed hat and was certainly holding a pilgrim’s staff in one hand. This attribute, along with the two hands, has disappeared , From a stone bas-relief dating from the 18C, which depicts the Adoration of the Magi. Religious painting is present in the form of two oil paintings on canvas: one showing the Marriage of the Virgin Mary to Saint Joseph before a priest of the Temple in Jerusalem, and the other Saint Jerome meditating, his right hand on his heart, while a cherub appears before his eyes.

The Church Saint-Pierre és Liens is built away from the village, on the hillside descending from the Hautil massif, south of the castle that overlooks it, parallel to the Paris-Saint-Lazare to Mantes-Station train line via Conflans-Sainte-Honorine. The parish of Vaux-sur-Seine is said to have been founded in 1154. Its patron saint is Saint Peter, Apostle and first Pope of Christendom. The specific name of Saint-Pierre-aux-Liens refers to the imprisonment of Saint Peter in Jerusalem in 44 AD, ordered by King Herod Agrippa. Under the Ancien Régime (monarchy) , the parish belonged to the deanery of Meulan, the archdeaconry of the French Vexin (with its seat in Pontoise), and the archdiocese of Rouen. The patron of the parish was the Archbishop of Rouen.

Other things to see here are the Pavillon d’Artois, 187 Grande-Rue; and the Villa “La Martinière,” formerly the municipal library, 87 rue du Général-de-Gaulle

A bit of history tell us that the land of Vaux was owned by the Counts of Meulan until 1118, the year of the death of Robert I of Meulan. The lordship of Vaux then passed through several families. It was formerly owned by the Counts of Meulan and the abbeys of Jumièges and Cernay. In the 17C, it was the lordship of the Count of Saint-Simon, a favorite of Louis XIII and father of the memoirist. At the time of the French revolution, it was owned by the Celestines of Limay.
