I come back to my beautiful Morbihan dept 56 of my lovely Bretagne.and belle France, This is a place that first was found in my road warrior trips in the area , and we have come back for its natural beauty in an off the beaten path area of Plouhinec 56 , I found me these pictures in my cd rom vault ,and they should be in my blog for you and me, do see my other post on the town in my blog Again, hope you enjoy the post on the Chapelle Notre Dame de la Pitié of Plouhinec 56 !!! as I.
The Chapelle Notre Dame de la Pitié or the Chapel of Our Lady of Mercy is located in the village of Kervarlay ,part of the town of Plouhinec, The chapel was likely built in the second half of the 15C. Its dedication to Our Lady of Mercy is perhaps linked to its proximity to the shore: it is a chapel for sailors, a purpose confirmed by the pardon (pilgrimage) dedicated to them. The nave windows flanking the door were opened during the 17C. The chancel window was probably blocked around the same time due to the installation of an altarpiece, which was replaced in the 19C. A small window above the facade was also blocked at an unknown date. The corner has been rebuilt, likely indicating the reconstruction of the wall, as has the upper part of the other side of the wall near the central window. During the reconstruction of the wall, probably in the 19C, the doorway was raised and the bell tower rebuilt. There are two ex-votos, a statue and a stained glass window both dedicated to Our Lady of Pity and representing the Saint with a marine anchor, a painting representing an Etellois trawler, the “Père Faro”,a watercolor painting another Etellois fishing vessel, “the Standard of Christ”.

The Chapelle Notre Dame de la Pitié occupies the corner of the village of Kervarlay, bordering the older buildings. A small churchyard extends between the path and the chapel, complemented by a slight rocky rise on the other side of the road, upon which the cross stands. The chapel is built of large granite blocks on the facade, while on the west side, small rubble stones are visible between the blocks. The arch of the former chancel window is still visible on the east gable. The south doorway is molded , and molded sloping sides are decorated on the corbels with human figures inscribed within a square. The interior walls have since lost their plasterwork.
