Let me tell you again about Bénodet, in the Finistére dept 29 of my lovely Bretagne and in my belle France. As the coasts around here are all wonderful. There is so much to see in architecture and history , and the beach is tops, See my other posts on Bénodet in my blog, This is a new post with older pictures found in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me. Therefore, let me tell you on the Chapelle de Perguet of Bénodet !!! Hope you enjoy this post as I.
The town of Bénodet is very much a riviera by a river and many upscale amenities with a clean , chic , quant outlook; we drove by the residential areas and all looks wonderful. See the wonderful Chapelle de Perguet as this was the name of the town until 1878! It is located at Route du Perguet,
The Chapelle de Perguet retains its Romanesque appearance of the late 12C on the north side, including the nave, while on the south side, the 16C addition of a transept, ossuary, and porch altered this aspect. The bell tower bears the date 1595. Additions in the 15C and 16C such as the enclosure wall, triumphal arch, porch, and ossuary resulted in a true parish enclosure. Its Calvary, restored in 1989, depicts Saint Lawrence and Saint Bridget, the two saints to whom this church is dedicated. It bears witness to several centuries from the 10C for the nave to the 15C for the bell tower.

The Chapelle de Perguet interior is Romanesque. The beautiful capitals, furnishings, and numerous polychrome statues are particularly noteworthy. The restored statuary, altar, and stained-glass windows display high-quality polychromy. We find the nave’s arcades and the triumphal arch forming the entrance to the choir are truly striking architectural features. The three northern bays are imposing and rustic. The same layout is found to the south, but the piers are supported by colonnettes with sculpted bases and capitals, from which spring transverse arches that elegantly frame the small windows pierced in the wall. There are also some beautiful capitals sculpted with interlacing patterns and very simple figures in the oldest Romanesque section, dating back to the 11C. The wooden statues of St. Lawrence and St. Herbot have been restored with polychromy. An oak stele, now inside, recalls that the chapel was dedicated to St. Bridget, a saint who lived in the 5C and was abbess of Kildare, Ireland, “Berc’hed” in Breton, which ultimately led to the pronunciation “Perguet”. The stained-glass windows, by Dominican Father Kim En Joong, were installed in 2000. They harmonize with the Romanesque architecture. The stained-glass windows, reflecting the evolution of architecture and art, bring a contemporary touch to the chapel, blending Romanesque and 21C art.
