The Pont Mirabeau of Paris !!!

I have written before on many things in Paris and sometimes I found me new things not yet in my blog that should be, This is the case lately of finding more pictures in my cd rom vault for you and me. I have written on many of the bridges of Paris this is another nice one to walk over it at least once in your lifetime, Therefore, here is my take on the Pont Mirabeau of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The pont Mirabeau bridge was built between 1893 and 1896 ; it spans the Seine from the 15éme arrondissement on the rive gauche or left bank to the 16éme arrondissement rive droite or right bank. It connects the Rue de la Convention and the rond-point du Pont-Mirabeau roundabout on the left bank to the Place de Barcelone and the Rue de Rémusat on the right bank. It honors the writer and tribune of the French revolution, Honoré-Gabriel Riquetti de Mirabeau. On the left bank, upstream, is the Javel station on RER line C. The Javel station, formerly known as Pont Mirabeau, was built for the 1900 Universal Exhibition. The Moulineaux line, from Champ-de-Mars to Les Invalides along the Seine, included other stations of this type, but this is the only one that remains today. This site is served by the Mirabeau and Javel – André Citroën metro stations on line 10.

The decision to build a new bridge at the intersection of Avenue de Versailles and Rue Mirabeau was made on January 12, 1893. The main arch has a span of 93 meters, and the two side arches are 32.4 meters long. The bridge is 173 meters long, 20 meters wide, with a 12-meter-wide roadway and two 4-meter-wide sidewalks. The two piers are shaped like boats. The one on the right bank is depicted going down the Seine, while the one on the left bank is shown going upstream. These boats are adorned with four allegorical bronze statues: the City of Paris (bow of the boat on the right bank), Navigation (stern), Abundance (bow of the boat on the left bank), and Commerce (stern). See pics, The two prow allegorical figures Paris and Abundance face the Seine, while the two stern allegorical figures Navigation and Commerce face the bridge, with their backs to the Seine. The four statues are surmounted, at the level of the parapet, by the coat of arms of the City of Paris. At the right bank end, one can descend to the riverside road via two staircases, one downstream, the other upstream, while on the left bank, one can descend to the Port of Paris via two ramps one downstream, the other upstream.

For the anecdote, there is a well-known poem by Guillaume Apollinaire, “Le Pont Mirabeau.” This poem has been of particular interest to the world of songs. It has been set to music by Léo Ferré in 1953, by Henri Tachan in 1991, by the group Pow Wow in 1996, and by Marc Lavoine in 2001.
