The Pont de Sully of Paris !!!

I have written before on many things in Paris and sometimes I found me new things not yet in my blog that should be, This is the case lately of finding more pictures in my cd rom vault for you and me. I have written on many of the bridges of Paris this is another nice one to walk over it at least once in your lifetime, Therefore, here is my take on the Pont de Sully of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Pont de Sully is the name given to the alignment of two bridges crossing two branches of the Seine river in Paris. It connects the 4éme and 5éme arrondissements of Paris. The bridge connects the Quai de la Tournelle on the left bank to the Quai des Célestins and the Quai Henri IV on the right bank after crossing the eastern tip of the Île Saint-Louis, bordering the Square Barye. It is actually two distinct bridges, joined by a section of Boulevard Henri-IV, each resting on the upstream end of the Île Saint-Louis. The bridge towards the right bank begins at Quai Henri-IV and ends at Quai d’Anjou, and the one towards the left bank begins at Quai de Béthune and leads to the Quai Saint-Bernard 7and Quai de la Tournelle. This site is served by the metro line 7 Sully – Morland station. The Parisian residence of Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully, was located near the bridge, and thereby, the name of the bridge,

In the 19C, the two distinct parts of this bridge were called “Passerelle Damiette” on the right bank side and “Passerelle de Constantine” on the left bank side. These were two suspension footbridges built in 1836-1837 and put into service in 1838. The Passerelle de Constantine, on the left bank side, is located between the Quai Saint Bernard and the Quai de Béthune. Consisting of a large span of 101 meters and two half-spans of 26 meters each, it collapsed in 1872 following the corrosion of its cables. The Passerelle Damiette, on the right bank side, is located between the Quai d’Anjou and the Quai des Célestins. Composed of two unequal spans of 50 and 77 meters, it was destroyed during the 1848 revolution. ,The current bridge was built in 1876, as part of Baron Haussmann’s major urban development projects, and inaugurated on August 25, 1877. Its name honors Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully, minister of Henry IV. It is positioned at an angle of approximately 45 degrees to the banks, which allows it to offer a splendid view of the quays of Île Saint-Louis and Notre-Dame Cathedral . The southern section, the longest (159 m), consists of three cast-iron arches of 46 x 49x 46 meters, while the northern section spans the smaller arm of the Seine with a central cast-iron arch of 46 meters and two 15 meters masonry arches. The bridge is 20 meters wide as 12 meters for the roadway and 8 meters for the two sidewalks.
