The streets of Versailles, part IX !!!

I have done plenty of posts on the streets of my dear Versailles but there are always older new paper and cd rom vault  pictures not in my blog that should be for you and me, After all, this blog is my life’s history and I thank you for coming along with me on my ride. Versailles needs no introduction me think ! However, just to make sure ,,,,I am bragging lol! I used to lived in Versailles for almost 10 years upon entering France! And have come back to visit several times never tired of it.  Therefore, let me tell you about the streets of Versailles, part IX !!! Hope you enjoy it as I

The Place Saint Louis since 1948. District of Saint-Louis, The main thing here is the Saint-Louis Cathedral (see post), On May 4, 1789, the opening procession of the Estates-General, which started from the Notre-Dame Church (see post), ended on the square. In the center of a small square to the west of the cathedral, a statue of Charles-Michel d’Espée, known as Abbé de l’Épée, born in Versailles, a pioneer of specialized education for the deaf. This statue was first erected at the crossroads of the Place Saint-Louis in 1843, then transferred in 1875 to the north of the cathedral at the entrance to the Carrée Saint-Louis .The square, in particular the paving, was maintained and restored to its 18C . The entrance steps to the church were repaired in 2014-15. A small wall fountain, connected to the old Pluyette reservoir , has been pouring its water episodically since 1766. While the Saint-Louis district, around its cathedral, actually occupies the former deer park of Louis XIII. This district was urbanized from 1685, as evidenced by the beautiful facades of the private mansions around the Saint-Louis Cathedral. This baroque building has bulbous domes to pay homage to the native Poland of Queen Marie Leszczynska. To feel the authentic soul of the place, take a stroll to the Carrés Saint-Louis: these old huts were built to house the stalls of a new market under Louis XV.

The Rue des États-Généraux is located in the Chantiers quartier or neighborhood of Versailles. It begins at 8 Avenue de Paris and ends at Place Poincaré, where Rue des Étangs-Gobert, Parvis Colonel-Arnaud-Beltrame, Rue de l’Abbé-Rousseaux, Rue des Chantiers, and Rue Benjamin-Franklin also intersect. It is part of the RD 186 road , formerly the RN 186. The Rue des États-Généraux takes its name from the fact that it runs alongside the Hôtel des Menus-Plaisirs (see post), located at 22 Avenue de Paris, where the 1,200 deputies summoned for the Estates-General of 1789 met. The inaugural session of the Estates-General opened on May 5, 1789, in the presence of the king. In the 18C, the street connecting Avenue de Paris to its current intersection with Rue de Noailles was called Rue des Chantiers, named for the numerous timber yards that once stood there. Beyond this point, up to the current Place Poincaré, the street was known as Rue du Chenil-Dauphin, due to the presence of the royal hunting lodge buildings. From 1793 to 1806, the two sections together were renamed Rue du Contrat-Social. They then jointly reverted to the name Rue des Chantiers, which they retained until 1935. In 1935, the section of the street between Avenue de Paris and Place Poincaré took its current name, Rue des États-Généraux. The rest of the street, between Place Poincaré and Rue Albert-Sarraut, remains named Rue des Chantiers, although it does not correspond in any way to the part designated under this name in the 18C. Notable buildings as I like it tell us here at No 4 lies the Café de la Poste (see pic) The staff are very friendly, the value for money unbeatable. Quick service. Family-friendly and calm atmosphere. Traditional cuisine, but also small portions…Whenever had collegues coming to Versailles took them here a nostalgic memorable place of my dear Versailles, It is also, a tabac selling cigarettes, and betting PMU races.
