The Musée Jacquemart-André of Paris !!!

I am back to my eternal Paris, oh well yes indeed. If someone invented the idea of a city then it definitively should have taken Paris as a model. We are at the museums, well my weak spot ! I am doing this post from my findings in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me. This is a special museum that for a long time passed in front of it without time to see it until one day it was it, a wonderful place worth the detour indeed, Really staying in the off the beaten path trails but needs to be visit by all including me again, The work was much so rather lazy the text is mostly from wikipedia, fyi, Therefore, here is my take on the Musée Jacquemart-André of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Musée Jacquemart-André is a fine and decorative arts museum located at 158 Boulevard Haussmann, in the 8éme arrondissement of Paris. Owned by the Institut de France, it has been managed by Culturespaces since 1996. The museum’s collections consist primarily of Italian and French paintings, as well as Dutch, Flemish, and English works, sculptures, as well as furniture and objets d’art.

Their collection, estimated at 5,000 pieces, brings together works and art objects from the late Middle Ages to the 18C. The Age of Enlightenment is particularly highlighted in the Painting Rooms, where paintings by Nattier and Boucher are hung. But the highlight of the visit is the Italian Museum, which presents a significant collection of paintings and sculptures from the Italian Renaissance: Mantegna, Donatello, Bellini, Botticelli, and Paolo Uccello, whose Saint George Slaying the Dragon is considered the museum’s masterpiece. It is layout with rooms as such, the Vestibule, Painting Room, Grand Salon, Tapestry Room, Study, Boudoir, Library, Music Room, Winter Garden and Staircase, Smoking Room, Tiepolo Fresco (recently renovated), Musicians’ Gallery, Italian Museum, Sculpture Room; Florentine Room; Venetian Room, Madame’s Room, Antechamber and Monsieur’s Room, and Dining Room (now the museum’s restaurant)

Originally a private residence belonging to a wealthy bourgeoisie, it has become a museum while preserving its original layout. Housed since 1864 with his collection at the Hôtel de Saint-Paul (3 rue Roquépine), Édouard André commissioned this second private mansion from architect Henri Parent in 1868. Édouard André was an heir to one of the largest fortunes of the Second Empire, originally from Nîmes, who had served in Napoleon III’s personal guard. He had acquired a 5,700 m² plot of land. The work, which took place from 1869 to 1875, created a hotel dedicated to parties and receptions, equipped with all modern amenities, in a theatrical setting. In 1872, André, an art lover, had bought the Gazette des Beaux-Arts and taken over the management of the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs; he then conceived the project of building a collection of 18C paintings, sculptures, tapestries, and objets d’art. In 1881, he married Nélie Jacquemart, a young painter who joined her husband’s projects. Together, they methodically built their collection, with Nélie taking a particular interest in Italian painting, from the primitives of the 14-15C to the Renaissance, representing 124 works out of the 137 Italian paintings preserved in Paris. At the same time, they arranged their home to best showcase their acquisitions. In 1894, André died, leaving Nélie to complete the future museum. She planned to bequeath the mansion to the Institut de France in order to preserve the integrity of her collection and make it known to as many people as possible, on the condition that it be opened to the public and transformed into a museum. Upon her death in 1912, Nélie Jacquemart bequeathed all of this heritage to the Institut de France. Since 1913, the effective date of the bequest, the Institut de France and the Jacquemart-André Foundation have strived to preserve, protect, and promote this heritage, with the layout of the premises remaining unchanged. On December 8, 1913, it was inaugurated with great pomp by President Raymond Poincaré. In 1995, management of the museum was entrusted to the company Culturespaces, which oversees the development of the spaces and collections, organizes temporary exhibitions, welcomes visitors, and manages communications, and operates the tea room and gift shop.
