And I come back to the Finistére in my lovely Bretagne to tell you about another gem that needs another and another visit me think. I like to tell you again about the Church Notre Dame de l’Assomption or St Michel in Quimperlé. Its once again in my road warrior mode that I came back to this wonderful fortified city. I have written before on the church, see posts, but this is new text and pictures of today. Hope you enjoy the post as I.
The Notre Dame of the Assumption Church was begun in the 13C, whose choir, side porches and tower date from the 15C. The nave retains its original layout. The southern porch is lined inside with ornate niches. The north porch is divided by two twin arcades supported on a pillar which supports a stoup and crowned by a canopy. The tympanum of the large arcade is carved with escutcheons and the gable decorated with crossettes. The south and north porches are surmounted by a bedroom accessible by a side staircase. They are rebuilt at the beginning of the 15C by the patronage of Duke Jean V, it is a fine example of the flamboyant Gothic style, which met with great success in Brittany.
The Notre Dame of the Assumption Church retains the oldest dated sand pits in Brittany from1430 as well as a rich statue of the Virgin. This church is a Gothic style located on Place Saint Michel. It was built in two phases ,and in 1373, the church was ruined by Du Guesclin. Of the first chapel, built at the end of the 13C, only the nave remains. The church was completely rebuilt in the 15C and recently underwent major restoration. The bell tower can be visited freely in small groups. From the top of the tower, a 360° panorama is offered to the city, allowing the discovery of the City under an unexpected light and invisible from the street. The choir, the side porches and the tower date from the 15C. The nave retains its original layout. The southern porch is lined inside with ornate niches. Outside, an astonishing Nursing Virgin in polychrome stone.
