Let me show you again the sights of Grand Champ in my beautiful Morbihan dept 56 of my lovely Bretagne. I have written before on the Church Saint Tugdual ,but these are new pictures of today, therefore an update is in order, Hope you enjoy the post as I.
The town of Grand Champ is located about 15 km from the city of Vannes, capital of the dept 56 Morbihan ,and 15 km from my house ! The nice monument here is the Church Saint-Tugdual , 15-16C, rebuilt in 1865. The first stone was laid in 1865 and the church was inaugurated in 1867. The bell tower dates from 1867.
Saint Tugdual came from Wales to evangelize Armorica (old name of Brittany). First bishop of Tréguier in the Trégor, he visited Pope Vigile in 555 on the day of his death. Grand-Champ is one of the oldest parishes in the diocese of Vannes. A first church was already dedicated to him in the 14C, at the same location. a date of its construction, but two dates appeared there 1428 and 1621. A tower was added there in 1669. The decision for a new building in 1864, and the destruction of the old church began the following year and the new church was completed on the 24 November 1867. Work on the bell tower which was completed in 1870. This housed the bells of the old church and two new ones were cast with the bronze of those of the Notre-Dame de Burgo chapel which had just collapsed. The whole, with the stained glass windows, the decorations and the installation of the furniture was finished in 1885.
Unfortunately, on November 11, 2018, a piece of plaster fell from the ceiling during the armistice ceremony. This weaking effect continue and the church has therefore been closed since October 4, 2021 while waiting for a complete diagnosis to be made prior to a restoration. Still pending….The architecture and historical element continues and hoping for a speedy recovery.I used to passed by it everyday on my way to work!
