I went out today to do my usual road warrior trips in my lovely Bretagne ! I was totally in Finistére dept 29, and as usual drove again by some gems to repeat visit. This time we had more time here and the sequel to the Church of Notre Dame de Trog-Wall of Clohars-Carnoët is here ! This is a wonderful town and beautiful church for all to see. Hope you enjoy the post as I.
For a brief intro, Clohars-Carnoët is bounded by the Laïta river which separates it from Morbihan (my dept 56), and is close to two towns, Quimperlé and Moëlan sur Mer (see posts). The territory is made up of a multitude of villages, hamlets (170!!! according to a recent book) and three main centers including the charming seaside resort of Pouldu located to the south-west of the town, the town further is about 3 km from the coast, and the port of Doëlan near Moëlan Sur Mer.(see posts).
I have return; to Clohars-Carnoët and again the Church of Notre Dame de Trog-Wall, nice souvenirs of the first visit and needed to come back again. And of course, you can see my other post with a lot more on the history and description of the church. These are new pictures of today, hope you enjoy them as I.
The parish Church of Notre-Dame de Trog-Wall dates from the 16C-19C, and is in the form of a Latin cross. It has been repeatedly renovated such as the south porch date from 1777, the Spire dates from 1794, the arches of the nave and the whole Church having been heavily reworked in the second half of the 19C.
It was in the heart of the village of Clohars-Carnoët that this church was erected and underwent various modifications in 1845. With a nave, a transept and a choir, the Notre-Dame -de-Trog-Wall also has a bell tower whose spire dates from 1774! Within it, one can also discover the statues of Saint Cornély, Saint Vincent-Ferrier or Saint Isidore dressed in Breton clothes. For the little anecdote, it is said that the church would have preserved the parish from a plague which then ravaged the surroundings of the city, it was then dedicated to Our Lady of Trogwall to thank her for her protection.
It is not uncommon to see planes from the naval air base of Lann Bihoué, Lorient, (which is nearby), flying over its bell tower!
