The Menez Dregan site of Plouhinec 29 !!

The town of Plouhinec is in the Finistère department 29 in my lovely Bretagne and in my belle France, not to be confuse with the same name town in nearby Morbihan 56, It is also part of the Cap Sizun – Pointe du Raz community of towns. It is located at the southern entrance to Cap Sizun, near the Pays Bigouden; I found me another stray picture in cd rom vault and it should be in my blog for you and me, Therefore, here is my take on the Menez Dregan site of Plouhinec 29 !! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Menez Dregan site is a prehistoric site of the town of Plouhinec, From their site it tell us that to understand where we come from, the site of Menez Dregan leads us through the traces of our ancestors. It’s a leap of 465,000 years back in time, back to when Homo Heidelbergensis learned how to use fire and hunted elephants across vast plains that now lie underneath the ocean waves. A cave, a burial chamber, a gallery grave: Menez Dregan covers a long period of prehistory going from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic period, around 5,000 BC.

The Gallery Grave (see pic) at Pors Poulhan, Neolithic grave consists of 16 pillars in two rows, topped with huge stone slabs. Unearthed and restored in the late 1980s, it is the largest and technically the most perfect example in Finistère. Just a single one of the roof slabs weighs 15 tons. The gallery grave is around 20 meters long, and around 2 meters high. The rich variety of remains found within the site suggests that it was used for a long period, from the late Neolithic to the Gallo-Roman period.

Discovered in 1985 by Bernard Hallégouët, the site was the subject of surveys in 1988 and 1989 and has been searched without interruption every summers since 1991 , After 32 years, the last excavation campaign is organized during the summer of 2020 found several archaeological levels testifyng of successive human occupations; From the oldest to the most recent, these are layers 9, 8, 7, 6, 5 and 4, covering a period of 300,000 years, which spreads between – 500,000 and – 200,000 years. The oldest witnesses in Europe of control of fire by man !

The centre d’interprétation de Menez Dregan or the Menez Dregan’s interpretation center inaugurated in 2012, the interpretation center ;managed by the town of Plouhinec unveils the global history of the occupation of this site in the prehistoric era. Dolmens from the tip of the Souc’h at the covered alley of Pors Poulhan, passing by the Menez-Dregan cave, it allows you to make a trip in prehistoric times. It completes a 9 -step interpretation path which evokes the evolution of the climate, the different human practices but also the methods and the contributions of archeology. It is located at 818 rue de la Corniche.
