The Church Notre Dame, aka the Church Notre Dame of the Assumption, or even Notre Dame of Salvation, was originally the first church in Chatou, located within the original settlement that formed the town. From this initial church, only the bell tower and the bedside remain

The Church Notre Dame de l’Assomption features a bell tower, a rather short nave flanked by fluted pillars, and side aisles, all illuminated by stained-glass windows. Two particularly striking elements are the bell tower and the facade. The bell tower dates back to the church’s initial construction in the Romanesque style in the 12C. The western facade, with its porch, dates from the late 19C. The apse is flat. The lower chancel indicates the church’s original level. The church also includes a sacristy and a chapel for the baptistery.

Among the most remarkable features inside the church are the organ, built in 1878 and enlarged in 2001-2002, a painting by Eugène Thirion from 1876 depicting Joan of Arc listening to her voices, a 14C wooden statue of the Virgin and Child restored in the 19C, and a copy of The Last Supper by Philippe de Champaigne by Isidore Dumont (a copy dating from 1878). The stained-glass windows are from the 19C, with the exception of four on the south facade, which date from 1984.

A bit of history tell us that this church was originally built in the 12C, replacing another church in Chatou, constructed of wood in the 11C on the site of a Merovingian sanctuary, which was destroyed during a Norman raid. Of the 12C Romanesque church, only the bell tower remains. The apse and the bays that follow date from the 13C, 16C, and 17C. Bombardments weakened the building during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, and restoration work was carried out in 1872. A spire was added to the bell tower, and the nave was renovated, incorporating fluted pillars. The façade dates from 1880. Further restoration and cleaning were undertaken in 2009 at the request of the town council.
