The Church Saint Ferdinand des Ternes is located in the 17éme arrondissement of Paris. The church is located between Rue Saint-Ferdinand and Rue Armaillé, slightly set back from Avenue des Ternes. The church is named “Saint-Ferdinand” in memory of the first name of Prince Ferdinand-Philippe of Orléans, eldest son of King Louis-Philippe, who died accidentally on July 13, 1842, near the nearby Porte Maillot. His patron saint was Saint Ferdinand III of Castile, who was King of Castile (Spain) from 1217 to 1230, and King of Castile and León from 1230 to 1252. The parish has distinguished itself for Catechism instruction using a Montessori-style teaching method.
The Church Saint Ferdinand des Ternes façade is adorned with three works depicting Saint Ferdinand, Christ, and Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus. Above the façade, the bell tower houses the three bells “Désirée, Fernande, and Rosalie,” which were moved to the bell tower during the construction of this new church.
The Church Saint Ferdinand des Ternes interior walls of the church have been partially decorated, notably in the apse Chapel of Saint John Vianney, where a mural depicts two of the missions of the Curé of Ars: preaching and hearing confessions. The Stations of the Cross, in stone mosaic, were created between 1991 and 1993. Each of the fourteen stations consists of a 33-centimeter square surmounted by a semicircle, evoking the domes of the nave. In the chancel, at the apse, the artworks depict the Last Supper (lower section), the Trinity (upper section), the Exodus from Purgatory (left), and the Church with the Pope, bishops, and the faithful (right). The left transept contains a large bronze crucifix and a mural in a naive style; this painting illustrates ordination, marriage, and the anointing of the sick. In the right transept, there is a mural depicting the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and penance. On January 12, 1941, the lower church, or “crypt,” dedicated to Saint Thérèse of Lisieux,(see post) was blessed by Emmanuel Suhard, Archbishop of Paris. This lower church took the name “Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus” and, as of 2016, remains the only church in Paris dedicated to this saint. In September 2017, a full-length statue of Saint Teresa of Calcutta was unveiled there. This statue, the first of this saint in France, was commissioned by the parish. In 1898, the church was equipped with a Cavaillé-Coll organ, which was electrified by the Beuchet-Debierre firm in 1963. The organ was replaced in 1995 with a new one.
A bit of history I like tell us it was built on the site of the former church, which had become too small, it serves as the place of worship for the Catholic parish of Saint Ferdinand des Ternes – Sainte Thérèse de l’Enfant Jésus. The very first church, inaugurated on March 25, 1847, was enlarged and consecrated on October 7, 1878. Once again too small, its reconstruction was decided upon in 1936. After an interruption due to the war, the façade on Rue d’Armaillé and the crypt were completed at the end of 1942. The crypt was consecrated on January 12, 1941, by Cardinal Suhard. The chancel and transept of the church were blessed and inaugurated on March 22, 1944. Final work continued until October 1957. The new church was inaugurated by Cardinal Feltin on October 6, 1957. The library, located at 21 bis rue d’Armaillé, contains approximately 3,000 diverse books: novels, mysteries, history books, documents, biographies, essays, and religious works—including a number in large print.
