I was perusing my blog and found post with so much info like in Orléans that decided to split and do one post on monument that deserves a post of their own , me think, This is the case of the nice Church Saint Paterne. The church was just across the street from where we were staying in the City (see posts). Therefore, here is my take on the Church Saint Paterne of Orléans, interiors !! The Church Saint Paterne is located at 112 rue Bannier,paralel with the Boulevard de Verdun , This 19C church is located on the site of the former Saint-Pouair priory. It is of Neo-Gothic style and offers a certain whiteness and interior luminosity. This church is not only used for worship but is also sometimes the venue for concerts thanks to its quality acoustics. What a nice discovery as the cult of Saint Paterne of Avranches (see ch Vannes 56) was introduced to the Orléans region by Breton Catholics fleeing the Norman invasions of the 10C. The Church Saint-Paterne was rebuilt between 1876 and 1883 on the site of the old church, which had fallen into ruin. In 1870, faced with the deplorable state of the church and the large number of parishioners, Father Chesse, the parish priest, began seriously considering the construction of a new church. The final decision was made in 1874, and on May 9, 1876, Bishop Dupanloup laid the foundation stone. In 1883, the chancel, chapels, transept, and sacristy were completed, and the church, consecrated by Bishop Coullié, began to be used. In 1888, construction began on the nave. The work, temporarily interrupted due to lack of funds, resumed in 1892 and was finally completed in 1894. On December 11 of that same year, the new church was consecrated.
Inside, there are stained-glass windows that provide lovely natural light, as well as modern stained glass. In the nave, there is a magnificent Stations of the Cross. In 1812, a small chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary was built in the north aisle. Three commemorative stained-glass windows, located in the first chapel of the north aisle, recall the actions of French soldiers on the front and then the victorious France.
The Church Saint Paterne contains certain rare features that visitors will benefit from discovering: a mosaic depicting the Cross of Saint Thomas, a stained-glass window in honor of the combatants of the Great War or WWI, a marble statue by Charles Desvergnes, a very realistic Stations of the Cross by Henri Bouriché, and beautiful paintings, copies of works by Jean Restout. Then, and most importantly, because these decorative elements ,the architecture, the impressive series of stained-glass windows illustrate the history of humankind and their faith in God.
In 1830, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot painted an urban landscape incorporating the bell tower of the Church Saint Paterne. The painting, an oil on canvas entitled *The Saint-Paterne Tower in Orléans* or *Orléans, View from a Window Looking at the Saint-Paterne Tower*, has been owned by the City of Orléans since 1967 and is housed in the City Museum of Fine Arts.
