We have driven in the area and would like to have an imprint in my blog on the wonderful towns of my belle France, There is so much to see , doing my best, and glad found me these pictures in my cd rom vault ,which now transposing in my blog for you and me, The City of Rochefort ,aka Rochefort-sur-Mer is located in the Charente-Maritime, dept, no 17 in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of my belle France Therefore, here is my take on the Maison de Pierre Loti of Rochefort !!!  Hope you enjoy the post as I. 

The Maison de Pierre Loti at 137 Rue Pierre Loti ; is the dream of Marine Officer, Julien Viaud, Pierre Loti in literature, He spent a large part of his life transforming his native house, where he lived in particular with his painter, Marie Bon, in a theatrical place where he was putting himself scene during memorable festivals, inviting all the celebrities of the time that his immense renown led him to frequent. For his sets, he was inspired both with the past from distant countries of the East and Far East, which he knew during his distant missions, Once passed behind the austere and banal facade, the visitor is transported to the magical and exotic universe of the writer who still fascinates as much a century after his creation. First of all, access is through the red living room and the blue living room which correspond to the family -like rooms with paintings and objects from the Viaud family. These two pieces are located on the ground floor. The other rooms in the house, on the first floor, are the work of the novelist. The Renaissance room with its Flemish tapestry from the 17C, its caissons ceiling, its monumental fireplace and its rostrum of musicians was the frame of famous evenings. The Gothic room, which corresponded to the old painting workshop of the novelist’s sister, underwent one of the most surprising transformations. It is made up of a fireplace, a ceiling with exposed beams, armor and Gothic windows from the bell tower then under construction from the church of Marennes. In this room took place in 1888 the “Louis XI dinner” where all the guests were disguised as period costumes and had to speak to each other as old French. The mosque could be reconstructed from authentic materials and objects dating from the 16C coming from a rich Damascus house even if the novelist liked to make believe that these were vestiges of the mosque of omeyyads burned at the same time. The Turkish lounge was adorned with an original sofa, cushions, drapes and a stucco ceiling. The Arab Chamber is illustrated by enamels and a moucharabieh. The Chinese room, closed to the public, has largely disappeared today. However, the city asked to revive it. The visit ends with the surprising monacal room whose simplicity and sobriety contrast in a striking way with the other parts.

On this house he was born on January 14, 1850 in the house of his parents141 rue Saint-Pierre, which has since become in 1895 rue Antoine Chanzy, this part having subsequently been renamed rue Pierre-Loti, He acquired in 1895 the patio house at n ° 139 rue Antoine Chanzy and spends a large part of his life transforming his birthplace and the neighboring house into a theatrical place where he stages himself during memorable festivals, inviting many celebrities of the time that his immense renown brings him to frequent, including, among others, the famous Sarah Bernhardt which was regularly invited to it ,In 1969, the novelist’s family yielded the house to the city of Rochefort which transformed it into a municipal museum and opened it to the public in 1973.

Currently, the museum has been closed to the public since 2012 because it requires heavy rehabilitation work where in particular the foundations must be consolidated and the collections restored. The objective of the city of Rochefort is to open the house to the public on Tuesday June 10, 2025, the anniversary of the death of Pierre Loti.
