This brings lots of good memories of my time while living in Versailles, we came here often especially to shop and did sightseeing too, This is a royal town of France but seldom mentioned or seen, sort of like an off the beaten path town. I have a few posts on it in my blog and glad to have found me more pictures in my cd rom vault that should be in for you and me. Maisons-Laffitte is a town in the département 78 Yvelines in the region of Île-de-France,of my belle France, Therefore, here is my take again on the Château of Maisons-Laffitte , part II !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.
This is the Château de Maisons Laffitte seldom visited but is a must for the architecture and the history of it . Well, it was not far from me as only 19 km along the Bd du Roi to Place de la Loi left on the roundabout to Bd Saint Antoine, or D186 continue same road becomes Route de Saint Germain, then Route de Versailles goes underneath the A13 autoroute de Normandie but continue becoming the N186 road same Route de Versailles continue on the roundabout of the Grille Royale bear rignt and continue same road bearing left onto Avenue de Saint Germain which same road becomes Avenue Charles de Gaulle bear right onto Bd Pierre Brosselette goes by the post office bdlg of Le Pecq and continue on Quai Maurice Berteaux with the Seine river on your right side this same road becomes Quai Voltaire or D159 road it then becomes Route du Pecq bear right onto Rue Maurice Berteaux or D157 road continue thru City center Le Mesnil du Roi bearing right onto Rue Etienne Peroux then left onto Rue de Mesnil continue into rue Carnot and the castle,
The castle was built by François Mansart, uncle of Jules Hardouin-Mansart who will build Versailles a few years later… This new castle takes the place of the previous castle built by the two lineages of house Lords. The castle will be great, to receive the king during the hunts in the forest of Saint-Germain. It is for this reason that the entrance to the monument is back to the Seine, preceded by a wide avenue coming from the forest. Construction started around 1642, ending at 1650. king Louis XIV lodged there in 1671 on the day of the death of Philippe François de France, duke d’Anjou.

In 1818, the estate passed to Jacques Laffitte. The famous banker then began subdividing it from 1824 onwards, dividing the park. The park and the small adjoining park were bought back by France in 1905 and became a sculpture museum for a few years until the start of the Great War or WWI. It then remained empty and neglected for many years before finally being restored, which is why it is now open to the public.

The Maisons-Laffitte park covers an area of 419.5 ha, of which: 147.6 ha are owned by the ASP (Association Syndicale du Parc de Maisons-Laffitte) 36.2 ha of reserves and built properties; 84 ha of avenues and squares; 27.4 ha of land granted to France Galop and the Sports Park ,and 271.9 ha are private properties (75.1 ha for the racecourse).

The grounds surrounding the castle covered a very large area and were divided into two parts: The small park, covering thirty-three hectares, to the east of the grounds, situated between the main avenue leading from the village gate and the château. Surrounding the château’s platform was the small park, composed of flowerbeds and ponds set on terraces sloping down to the river. The large park, covering three hundred hectares, to the west of the grounds, situated between the main avenue leading from the village gate and the Saint-Germain forest.
