Well back in old familiar territory, and again even if written on the town several times, I missed the times by there ; this is royal Mantes la Jolie or Mantes the beautiful just because of Henri IV well read those posts. The city of Mantes-la-Jolie is in the Yvelines department 78 in the Île-de-France region, and in my belle France, I found me older pictures in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, Therefore, let me tell you about the pavillon Duhamel of Mantes La Jolie !! Hope you enjoy the post as I
The Pavillon Duhamel located at16 rue l’Evesque, was built in neoclassical style, between 1906 and 1907, at the request of Victor Duhamel to house his personal collections of works of art and objects, collected during his travels. The museum was inaugurated on June 13, 1909. The Pavilion is only open occasionally for the organization of conferences, workshops, events, etc. Its wide steps invite the visitor, by a flight of semicircular steps, to the main door. A very beautiful wrought iron door is surmounted by a ceramic allegorically representing the founding of this museum. The Louis XVI-style exterior and interior ornaments are also highly elaborate and punctuate the various architectural elements.

The Pavillon Duhamel consists of three floors, all three organized according to the layout of the Italianate room surrounded by a gallery. On each level, on either side of this central room, at the corners, are four symmetrical rooms. The ground floor is organized around a large hall, once the main part of the museum. The staircase is its centerpiece and provides a refined distribution of the floors. The large hall and the galleries on the first floor presented display cases filled with objects. The corner rooms, on the ground and first floors, housed a fountain room, a family room, an Empire room, a Louis XVI room, an Oriental room, and an Italian room. In 1940, the museum was closed as a precaution. The works were crated and protected from the bombing of WWII. The museum suffered little damage, but its doors did not reopen. It wasn’t until 1996 that the collections were rediscovered in the new rooms of the Hôtel Dieu Museum (see post).

Located in the Duhamel Pavilion, the Maison de la Mémoire, inaugurated on February 9, 2012, offers visitors a free journey through the history of France. Since September 2022, a library with 400 books has been available. This house houses the headquarters of all of the city’s patriotic associations. The Maison de la Mémoire also offers a journey through history thanks to a museum dedicated to the various conflicts that France has experienced. Uniforms worn by the soldiers during the various wars, weapons, photographs, flags, and more are all on display.
