This is in my beloved former home of Versailles. Needless, to say more about this wonderful royal town of my former Yvelines dept 78, just read the monuments that have proven essential in the history of France. I have found pictures in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me, There are special trip to the Petite Ecurie du Roi,a must to visit while in the City, Therefore ; let me tell you a bit about the Galerie des Sculptures et des Moulages in the Petite Écurie du Roi of Versailles !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I,
The Petite Écurie du Roi or the King’s Little Stables were built by the architect Jules Hardouin-Mansart from 1679 to 1682, the Galerie des Sculptures et des Moulages or the Gallery of Sculptures and Casts have since 2012 presented to the public a plaster cast containing a collection of approximately 5,000 sculptures and casts from ancient times, especially Roman times, since it was only in the 18C that archaeologists became deeply interested in Greece. It is open during high season (April 1st to October 31st) on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, except Mondays and May 1st, from 12h30 to 18h30 (last admission 17h45). The Sculpture and Cast Gallery is open for guided tours only.

The three large galleries that form the current Gallery of Sculptures and Casts were originally occupied by horse stalls: sixty-eight on each side of the rotunda, forty-eight in the axial gallery leading to the main courtyard. The portal opening onto the latter is dominated by The Coachman of the Circus, a relief sculpted by Louis Le Conte in 1680. The latter is also the author of the four trophies of ancient weapons with sagging Roman armor sculpted on either side of the arcade. This collection of casts after Antiquity is distinguished by the presence of old prints from the 17-18C, and by a rich collection of Greek and Roman architecture. To this magnificent collection, marble originals from the Garden of Versailles have been added, as part of the campaign to save the sculpted masterpieces from the gardens of Louis XIV.

The Petite Écurie dur Roi was occupied by the army from the mid-19C until 1967. Belonging to the Versailles Public Establishment, it has been completely restored and has since housed the Centre for Research and Restoration of the Museums of France, the National School of Architecture of Versailles, as well as various collections. Since 1970, the Gallery of Sculptures and Casts has housed the gypsothèque of the Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities of the Louvre Museum.
