Here is my continuing journey in my eternal Paris as I can’t be too far away from Paris and I need to bring up new pictures gladly found in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me. This is wonderful and glad found me the pictures, an off the beaten path jewel worth the detour. Therefore, here is my take on the Church du Saint Esprit of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy this post as I,

The Church du Saint-Esprit or of the Holy Spirit is located in the 12éme arrondissement of Paris. Its main entrance is at 186 Avenue Daumesnil; there is another entrance at 1 Rue Cannebière. The church is accessible by metro lines 6 and 8 at the Daumesnil station and by metro line 8 at the Michel Bizot station.

The architecture of the Church of the Holy Spirit, with its striking juxtaposition of Byzantine influence and reinforced concrete, is unique. Built entirely of reinforced concrete clad on the exterior with Burgundy bricks, the church has a square nave topped by a dome measuring 22 meters in diameter and 33 meters high. The bell tower, 85 meters high, the most recent construction completed in 1963, houses four bells and living quarters.

The Church du Saint Esprit is endowed with a significant heritage of religious works of art. All the frescoes are linked by a single concept: the spread of the Holy Spirit in human history. They recount the key elements of the history of the Church from Pentecost to the 20C through two themes: the history of the Church Militant and that of the Church Triumphant. The Ateliers d’art sacré or the Sacred Art Workshops were created in 1919 by Maurice Denis and Georges Desvallières. Their purpose was not only to train and instruct, but also to produce works of art for the service of God. Their method: to innovate in the different arts (painting, sculpture, stained glass and furniture). Here Maurice Denis painted Pentecost on dry plaster and George Desvallières the Stations of the Cross on mounted canvas. The organ, built in 1934, was inaugurated in December 1934.

A bit of history I like tell us that to respond to the strong population growth in the area after the Great War or WWI, the decision was taken in 1928 to build a new place of worship. The construction of the Church of the Holy Spirit was initiated by Cardinal Verdier, known as “the archbishop of a hundred churches”, in reference to the Chantiers du Cardinal, a social and religious organization he founded in 1931, which was intended to build churches in working-class neighborhoods and create jobs in the context of the economic crisis of the 1930s. The church was completed in 1935. It is the most important achievement of the Chantiers du Cardinal.
