Always by the coast and again a new town visited, amazing of the many wonderful spots in my lovely Bretagne, Do read my other posts in my blog on the town, We were again in my road warrior mode ! Dear to me as this saint is my native town patron saint ! Therefore, let me tell you about the Chapelle Sainte Barbe of Paimpol !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

As usual by me for reference, the town of Paimpol is located in the Côtes-d’Armor department 22 in my lovely region of Bretagne, and in my belle France. Built around its basins, Paimpol is one of the main fishing and pleasure ports overlooking the English Channel. at the western end of the Bay of Saint-Brieuc, at the bottom of the Bay of Paimpol The town is on the road D 786 , and 116 km from Saint-Malo ,37 km from Saint-Brieuc, 34 km from Lannion, 72 km from Morlaix , 30 km from Guingamp , 142 km from Rennes, and 147 km from my current home.

The Chapelle Sainte Barbe was built in the 17C, located in the former parish of Kérity, now a district of Paimpol. The chapel was sold in 1794, as church property during the French revolution. In 1829, the chapel was returned to the parish of Kérity, the owners having donated it to the Church Council. In 1908, the rector of Kérity had major work done to embellish the chapel: a porch and a bell tower were added and a new bell was installed. It was in this chapel, the only one in the parish, that every year, fishermen from Iceland and Newfoundland came on pilgrimage to ask Saint Barbe (Santa Barbara) to protect them from lightning and all dangers. In addition to the small pardon celebrated on December 4, the great pardon is celebrated on Ascension Day. On this day, many pilgrims come to visit the chapel. They used to bring their offering of wheat or money.

Outside, the Chapelle Saint Barbe, there is the Kérity cross and a cellar in which the faithful’s donations in kind were stored. The latter was later transformed into an oratory housing a statue of Sainte Barbe. The entrance to the chapel is surmounted by a niche also housing a statue of Sainte Barbe. Among the statues inside the chapel are notably those of Notre-Dame Blanche and Saint-Yves, defender of the poor, of Saint-Rion and of course Sainte-Barbe, a lantern at her feet. The two ex-votos are two-masted ships: a white and green hulled schooner with no particular inscription; this schooner is suspended from the vault of the chapel, an older square schooner, in the form of a diorama, carved from a piece of wood, and bearing the inscriptions “P4” on the side and “Sainte-Barbe – Paimpol” on the stern. This ship rests on a base symbolizing the sea. The two ex-votos date from the 20C,
