Again, for reference and the new readers , the town of Carnac is indeed two. There is Carnac bourg or city center inland ,and there is Carnac plage or beach, along the ocean where the beaches are of course. Both are about 2 km away. Oh yes this is south of me 28 km in my beautiful  Morbihan  dept 56 of my lovely Bretagne and in my belle France!

This museum is awesome if want to understand the meaning of all these old stones spread around a vast area and not really certain how it got here or by who, The official name is the Musée de Préhistoire James Miln and Zacharie Le Rouzic de Carnac, . The museum was created in 1881 following the legacy of James Miln, is a monothematic museum ,that, also bears the name of the archaeologist Zacharie Le Rouzic. It is in the old presbytery building of the 19C showing collection from the paléolithique era to the Gallo Roman period.

Following a chronological itinerary, you will discover a rich collection of pottery, ceramics, flint tools or ornaments, which allows you to touch the finger the daily life of the former inhabitants of Carnac! Through plans, models and objects found during the excavations, you also will understand the evolution of funerary architecture. In all, more than 6,600 objects are on display, with a particular predilection for the Neolithic period, which saw the birth of the first megaliths.   The evolution of funerary architecture is traced, from corridor dolmens to covered alleys. Daily life is told using objects found on archaeological sites (ceramics, flint tools, polished axes, ornaments, etc.).See the big stone dolmen chevet of the table des Marchands. Also, gallo roman coins and statues of Venus!

The simply call the musée de Carnac, is a must to see. I recommend to see the museum and then go to the alignments (see posts). The first museum in the world for megalithism, the museum is the essential prelude to the visit of the dolmens and standing stones around. Do not miss the large alpine jade axes, the polished ornaments imported from Spain… so many prestigious objects, witnesses of the time when Carnac was a great European center of power and wealth, at the beginning of the 5th millennium BC. The museum is help by contributions and donations to it. The Association Paysages de mégalithes de Carnac et du sud Morbihan, who is in charge of preparing and carry the candidature of the museum to the inscription of Unesco World Heritage site, also, has its home office in the museum. There is a boutique with books, jewerly, fluffy animals and many souvenirs.
