I am staying in my beautiful Morbihan dept 56 of my lovely region of Bretagne, and in my belle France. I am revising old posts, to my surprise, several pictures not included in my blog yet ! Treffléan is a nice small town not far from me and in my road warrior rides passed by it many times, Therefore, let me tell you about the Chapelle Notre Dame de Bon Secours of Treffléan ,part II !! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel ,aka Notre-Dame-de-Cran Chapel or Templar Chapel, It is in the hamlet of Cran off D104. They are the Knights of the Temple and the Hospital which in 1182 would have built the Notre-Dame de Bon Secours Chapel. In the 16C the chapel was rebuilt on its Roman foundations. The mansion erected at the end of the 17C, behind the chapel, replaces an older one, the Commandery of the Templars or a fortified farm. The fountain dating from 1740 rises in a vast paved enclosure, surrounded by a low granite wall.
It is told that already in the 13C new elements were present as the transept or the northern staircase. But it was in the 14C that the place knew its peak thanks to many pilgrimages. It was following a quarrel between the rector and the bishop about the income generated by the pilgrimages that in 1319 Pope John XXII granted 100 days of indulgences to those who would go to the Virgin of Cran for celebrations , At the end of the 14C ,and at the beginning of the 15C , the chapel will be enlarged and altered more Gothic. We will see the appearance of the square tower and the southern transept. Then come the enhancement of the walls and the sculptures on the frames and sandstones. As well as the interior paintings that are renowned today of the chapel.
The interior of the Chapelle Notre Dame de Bon Secours has a series of high value elements, including frescoes, sand pits, statues and a wooden altar. The southern and west walls of the chapel are covered by a fresco dated 1594 representing the crucifixion and several saints. The painted decor originally covered the entire walls of the nave. Sandstones are horizontal beams placed along the load -bearing walls. In the chapel , these wooden beams are carved and dated from 1524 to 1556. We can notably see a fox blowing in a bagpipe. The chapel has several polychrome wooden statues, representing the Trinity (16C), Christ (16C) ,and a Virgin and Child (15C) as well as a carved wooden altar, signed and dated 1788, in the Baroque style, and includes a painted wooden tabernacle of the 17C. The baptismal font of the chapel is a former Lec’h dug.

A Pardon or forgiveness walk is organized in the chapel each year on the first Sunday following August 15. Concerts are also organized during the summer.
