The plage du Sillon of Saint Malo !!!

Let me start by saying that this is north Bretagne in an area most folks do not know or realise the beaches are gorgeous and name so in many international publications. Of course, Summers are short and that is the big difference. Otherwise, as I said many times ,they can compete with any same time. And I grew up on a beach, and lived very near 150 meters as a young adult. Of course, this is a beautiful town to visit too, Saint Malo, in dept 35 of Ille et Vilaine in my lovely Bretagne, and belle France, Took this one because feels deserves a post of its own ; therefore, here is my take on the plage du Sillon of Saint Malo !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

There are about 16 beaches here but for us on the best and revisit each time is the Grand plage or plage du Sillon , 3 km long, extends from the old town intra muros to the pointe de Rochebonne. It is the largest beach in Saint-Malo and its 3 km goes from the Intra-Muros, where it bears the name Plage de l’Eventail (see post). This beach also links Intra-Muros and Paramé, two districts of Saint-Malo. Extending to fort National to the pointe de Rochebonne at the limit with the beaches of the bay of Minihic.During high tides, the Sillon beach, also sometimes called the Grande Plage, disappears entirely under the water and it is quite impressive to see!

It is both turned towards the sea horizon and the setting of Paramé where the most beautiful Malouine villas are. The windy activities are preferred on this beach: kite, tank and windsurfing . The Plage du Sillon beach brings together the Grand beach, La Hoguette beach and Rochebonne beach. The dike was built from 1883 to 1913 on an old sand arrow or the groove which once connected paramé to the closed city and which constituted the only dry access in low tide. Originally, a strip of sand was covered with dunes more and more …

This vast sand beach can be used as the tide goes out. The inconvenience is that is is near the road and the city. To the east the road gets further and we find a pedestrian promenade. The beach has three first-aid stations in the summer. The first is the closest to the old city and Sillon. The second is available in the place called Parame, the beach is nicknamed Hoguette Beach. The last is located near the point Rochebonne and the beach takes its name from this point. Parking is rather difficult for this beach. We can find a few free spots for the eastern part of the beach by taking different impasses which open to the beach. Or part in land away from the beach and a short walk to it as we do. The Promenade du Sillon takes you to discover famous buildings built by the Malouins. From the Saint-Vincent gate to the Grand Hôtel des Thermes Marins, passing by the Digue de Rochebonne, pierce the mystery of these places which make the city of Saint-Malo so special. To admire the National Fort, the first step in our walk, follow the walls of the Château de Saint-Malo via the Douveses Garden, square established in 1880 which covers the old medieval trench. After a few meters, you can take advantage of the point of view offered by the forecourt of the Eventail range. At the foot of the Eventail and throughout the dike, you will be accompanied by an alignment of breeze. In oak, these wood piles built at the beginning of the 19C protects it from the force of the waves. Their depth is at least equal, even greater than their visible height.

Originally, the corsair city was only connected to the land by a sandbank called Le Sillon. It was therefore an island at high tide and a peninsula at low tide. On this more and higher dune ,we were heading towards Rochebonne stood a succession of windmills. The first pavement was built in 1509. The construction of the dike began in 1853 then will be regularly elongated to protect the land below the sea. 1671 meters long, the dike is bordered on one side by many villas built towards the end of the 19C, on the other by the plage du Sillon beach.
