The Church Saint Martin of Mouzillon !

Again on my road warrior mode in my belle France. I have passed by many many small towns that seems obscure at first but pack a wonderful history and heritage of their own. Therefore, let me use this post to tell you about the Church Saint Martin of Mouzillon !  Hope you enjoy the post as I

The town of Mouzillon is located in the Loire-Atlantique department 44, in the Pays de la Loire region. Mouzillon is located in the Muscadet vineyard, 2 km from Vallet, 6 km from Clisson, and 28 km from Nantes.

The Church Saint-Martin was rebuilt in 1873 in neo-Gothic style, The church is dedicated to Saint Martin de Vertou, abbot, evangelizer of the region in the 6C, The one preceding it having been destroyed with more than 168 houses in the town around 1794 by one of the hellish columns led by Thureau during the French revolution. It is a church housing within it a small treasure: a canvas of Pierre Roy, surrealist painter with international renown. Entitled “L’hommage aux morts de la paroisse de Mouzillon” or the tribute to the dead of the parish of Mouzillon, it was carried out in 1920.

The Church Saint Martin is in very poor condition, closed for five years, and the latest is that it will be deconstructed, then rebuilt again, The current church is very weak and in dangerous conditions, The town has decided not to restore its church, as financially costly. The town which is responsible for the maintenance of the church will not have any funding ,only private donations can decrease the cost, It has been decided that the future church will be rebuilt on the same location , site on which is the crypt which has just been rehabilitated ,the objective is to have the first sketches in the first quarter of 2024 as well as the costing, This is around 2 million Euros, Hope it can be done, sad to see a historical monument go for lack of funds, working on it

The parish of Mouzillon was undoubtedly founded in the 6C by the abbot of the Saint-Martin of Vertou Abbey, and given by inheritance after the Norman invasions to the sister Abbey of Saint-Jouin. The oldest manuscript which mentions the name of the parish of Mouzillon is a bubble of Pope Alexandre III in 1179. This manuscript teaches us that at that time the cure of Mouzillon belongs to the Abbey of Saint-Jouin-de-Marnes , founded by Saint Martin de Vertou. The Marquis de la Galissonnière was the Upper Lord and founder of the church of Mouzillon. In 1532, in his pastoral visit, the bishop of Nantes ordered the parishioners to rebuild the choir and the chanteau of their church

The other things to see here me think are its Pont Gallo-Roman bridge of four unequal arches which spans the Sanguèze. It would be the vestige of a Celtic road which linked Rouen to Bordeaux and of which Mouzillon would have been a stage. Nearby, the Saint-Julien fountain, this source was said to be miraculous for pilgrims going to Santiago de Compostela, however its water would have been venerated by the pagans before the Christian era. Formerly this fountain contained three niches, one for the Virgin, one for Saint-Ferréol and the third for Saint-Julien. The construction that can be seen today is of square plan and presents a niche on its pediment, in which the Virgin has resumed her place.
