Curiosities of Pontivy, part II !!!

I am back to a memorable town just up the road from me, This is Pontivy,a wonderful small town in my beautiful Morbihan 56 of my lovely Bretagne in my belle France. Memorable ,because one of my son’s worked here. There is always pleasant to be here, on Napoleonville now Pontivy ; you can see my other posts on the town in my blog. Let me tell you again about the curiosities of Pontivy, Part II !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I

The Maison des Trois Piliers (the house with three pillars), the only remaining example in Morbihan of a 16C porched house. It is located at corner of rue du Docteur-Ange-Guépin, and place du Martroy, the front of which has a projection supported by three granite pillars . An emblem of the city and supported by it.

The Place du Martray is a unique and historic place in the center of Pontivy. You see all around it a few medieval houses dating from the middle ages ,and Renaissance, which give the place its timeless charm. Some are already told in my blog such as the Hôtel de Roscoët with its turret, built in 1578, Behind the trees, you arrive at Rue du Fil and you can see the famous Maison des 3 Pilliers on the right. The Place du Martray was like most Breton squares bearing this name, it was located near the market halles and houses with porches and welcomed some of the traders on fair or market days. From the 15C to the 18C, local Pontivyans gathered there to celebrate the end of Lent. The game of quintain required any married man in the last twelve months to come and break three spears against a post decorated with the arms of the Rohan ,the quintain, and this, installed in a cart pulled at high speed, under the laughter and applause of many spectators.

The rue Lorois is now entirely paved, This was called rue de Neuillac , There is a nice 16C house known as the Rohan hunting meeting place (see post), and the corner the Hôtel de Roscoët. The canvas market was located on the site of current rue Lorois. Halles/market on the ground floor, theater upstairs, Still is today,

The central square of Pontivy is called Place Aristide-Briand ,but all locals call it La Plaine. This is the prime parking to walk and see the City, however, often saturated. There is a second car park, a few steps away. It’s that of the Pyramids, behind rue d’Iéna. The statue here is that of General de Lourmel, born in Pontivy , who became friends with Napoleon III, This square was called before Place Napoléon, You have the cavalry quarter finished in 1811, the prison center in 1813, the City/ town hall was completed in 1834, the sub-prefecture in 1839, This is the square where the flea market takes place every Monday on the plaine from 8h30 to 14h. About thirty food stands offer you,  fruits and vegetables, cheeses, fish, meats, pancakes, coffees and various prepared meals . The rest is more clothing, leather goods, linens etc.
