I will cut it short on text as plenty on my previous two posts on it, As you might be aware due to the fire of July 18, 2020, there is lead depollution work and the first restoration work on the St Peter and St Paul Cathedral are planned for 2023 and will primarily concern the choir of the cathedral in order to reopen this first part for worship before a partial reopening which does not seem possible before 2025 or 2026.  The assessment from the fire was heavy: the large organ dated the 16C and 17C was destroyed, the stained glass windows of the large bay of the strongly damaged facade, part of the stalls (seats dedicated to the clergy) and the Saint Clair table healing the blinds of Hippolyte Flandrin burned. The cathedral is close for work until futher order ,It was still close when we visited this time, but we parked in front of it on street parking for 5 euros all day, and walked all over !!

Some of my favorites is finding anecdotes of history and here there are two, Anecdote 1: In 1796, Mr. Fleury issued the wish to buy the cathedral to demolish it and make it a stone quarry. His project is to extend the rue du Département to Cours Saint André and Saint Pierre. Groleau, chief engineer of bridges and roads, firmly opposes this urban project by advancing several arguments. According to him, in addition to its ornamental function, the monument is of strategic importance for the military: its high towers offer an ideal observation post, while the wars of Vendée continue. In addition to its military function, it is very useful in central school to allow students to make astronomical observations. These unstoppable arguments except the cathedral of a potential destruction !! Anecdote 2: A bottle of Nantes wine was discovered behind a stone during the restoration work on the cathedral facade. It contained a message dated 1907 which indicated the price of “Gros Plant”, the bottle in which it was sealed, and encourages future generations to reconnect with tradition. This word, left by a worker of the last century, was delivered in his place after a new message was written. Nice indeed.

  1. Before the fire I would go to mass here. The organ was huge and the music from it was mazing. You would feel some of the notes just going right through you. I really miss it dearly, and can’t wait to go to mass there again.
