Tréguier and Ernest Renan !!!

I went back up to the north of me at the Côtes d’Armor dept 22 of my lovely Bretagne, We went to Tréguier! Always by the coast and again a new town visited, amazing of the many wonderful spots that we still need to visit, easy does it, I will be telling you about this town in my next post from our visit this week in my road warrior mode ! Therefore, let me tell you about Tréguier and Ernest Renan !!!, and hope you enjoy the post as I.

The smallness of the town’s territory with only 153 hectares or about 1,5 km, blocking the growth of the town and has long slowed down urban redevelopment. In 1927, the boulevard Anatole Le Braz was opened, which passes under the vaults of the City/town hall and allows direct access to the bridge crossing the Guindy towards Plouguiel, , I came to Tréguier mostly taking the D768 however, the main road here is the D786 connecting to Saint-Brieuc and Lannion as well as my short trip to Paimpol (see post).

The statue of Ernest Renan, by Jean Boucher, erected in 1904 on the Place du Martray, aroused many controversies at the time of its installation. We read, engraved on the base: “Ernest Renan, born in Tréguier on February 28, 1823. Great things can only be done with science and virtue. The faith we have had must never be a chain. Man creates beauty in what he loves and holiness in what he believes. E. R. The house of his birthplace has become a museum dedicated to his life and work. This 16C half-timbered house houses souvenirs of Ernest Renan, manuscripts, portraits; a room presents a video montage evoking the life of the writer, the places he frequented. The Ernest-Renan Museum is located at 20 rue Ernest-Renan webpage : https://www.maison-ernest-renan.fr/

The rue Renan, formerly called “Grand’rue”, lost its quality as a main street at the end of the 19C in favor of Rue St André following the construction of the Canada Bridge. It was renamed in 1903 in homage to the great philosopher ,Ernest Renan. The upper part of rue Renan just before leading to the place du Martray is rich in granite houses and, at the corner of the street and the square, a beautiful and tall half-timbered house. At Rue Renan see no. 22, no. 31, no. 56, no. 59, no. 63, and no. 65.

Other things to see in Tréguier are the Convent of the Augustines, rue de la Chalotais,The Calvaire de la Protestation or Calvary of the Protest, which dates from 1904, was erected as a sign of protest by the Catholics following the erection of the statue of Ernest Renan,at the Place du Martray. Under a relief representing Saint Yves between a rich and poor people, with statues of Saint Tugdual, founder of Tréguier, and Saint Brieuc. They are surrounded by statues of spiritual warfare saints: Saint Maurice, Saint George, Joan of Arc and Saint Louis. They are flanked by Saint Peter and Saint Andrew. And ,the aqueduct on the Guindy.

A new seminary opened there after the revolutionary turmoil in 1816, initially installed in the Auberge du Lion d’Or, then in the old college, before returning to the premises of the former Lazarist seminary; this is where the young Ernest Renan completed his secondary studies between 1832 and 1838. However, during his lifetime Ernest Renan was very frowned upon by a large part of the city’s population. A new chapel was inaugurated there in 1897. This college where Renan studied was destroyed in 1911 and was located on the site of the current Place de la République, On August 14, group A of the American 15th Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, which was in the morning on a line Lanvollon – Pontrieux – La Roche-Derrien-Lannion, helped by around 300 FFI resistance fighters, liberated Tréguier.
