Curiosities of Tréguier, part I !!!

I went back up to the north of me at the Côtes d’Armor dept 22 of my lovely Bretagne, We went to Tréguier ! Always by the coast and again a new town visited, amazing of the many wonderful spots that we still need to visit, easy does it, I will be telling you about this town in my next post from our visit this week in my road warrior mode ! Therefore, let me tell you about the curiosities of Tréguier, part I !!!, and hope you enjoy the post as I

The smallness of the town’s territory with only 153 hectares or about 1,5 kmé, blocking the growth of the town and has long slowed down urban redevelopment. In 1927, the boulevard Anatole Le Braz was opened, which passes under the vaults of the City/town hall and allows direct access to the bridge crossing the Guindy towards Plouguiel, , I come to Tréguier mostly taking the D768 however, the main road here is the D786 connecting to Saint-Brieuc and Lannion as well as my short trip to Paimpol (see post),

The town center of Tréguier, the “old town”, a third of the town’s territory, is a protected sector, it has 57 half-timbered houses, which places it in the 7th rank of Breton towns, You can see the house on no 7 of the corner of the Place du Général de Gaulle and rue Ernest Renan, At Rue de la Chalotais see no. 2, and no.14, the Saint-Pierre house, known as “Pondalez,” very similar to the one that houses the Morlaix museum (see post). Rue Colvestre see no. 11, no. 12, no. 14, no. 20, and no. 22, At Place Notre-Dame-de-Coatcolvezou see no. 10, no. 12, and no.18 , , Also, the Hôtel de la Tour, including the gate of the former bishopric

The War Memorial, nicknamed la Douleur or the pain, is the work of sculptor Francis Renaud, it illustrates the pain of a Breton woman in a mourning cloak. It was inaugurated on July 2, 1922 to honor the Poilus (young men barely with hair who went to the front) fallen in combat in WWI. Considered a masterpiece of Breton monumental art from the interwar period, La Douleur does not leave one indifferent and still very often questions passers-by and tourists. A Turquin type marble, 45 cm high,Pain,is in kersanton stone, with laurel garland 3 meters long and bronze helmet is erected in the main courtyard of the former Episcopal Palace , She wears the traditional headdress the touken and the costume of Trégor area. This woman, seated on a stone bench, meditates and mourns her dead, dressed in the mourning cape, her head tilted forward and the lower part of her face hidden by a panel cape.

The story of the printing is huge here, In 1485, a typographic workshop was established in Tréguier and the master in the art of printing de Lantréguer of whom we only know the initials Ja. P. completed his edition of “Coustumes de Bretaigne” on June 4, 1485. Tréguier was therefore the 3rd locality in Brittany, where typographic art was put into practice. The 2 incunabula printed in Tréguier are: The custom of Brittany, And the Breton Catholicon. The custom of Brittany, printed in Tréguier by Ia. P. on May 17 and June 4, 1485, is divided typographically into 3 parts. All that remains in France of the Custom of Brittany printed in Tréguier is a single copy deposited in the National Library. The catholicon is a vocabulary in three languages, Breton, Latin and French, printed in Tréguier by Jean Calvez and dated November 5, 1499. This masterful work for its time demonstrated an unusual erudition in its authors. There are three known copies of this incunabula, one in the Library of Quimper, one in the National Library under the reference X 1429 + A and the third in the Municipal Library of Rennes.

The port of Tréguier is a deep water port, with access at any time of the day or night. It has 310 places spread over 5 pontoons. It has a port, located 9 km from the sea, active since the Middle Ages !. It is now accessible, thanks to its depth, to boats of fairly large tonnage and, if it is still a commercial port, to modest traffic,
