The Château de Pont Sal of Plougoumelen !!!

The town of Plougoumelen is located in my beautiful Morbihan and my lovely Bretagne region of my belle France. The town is about 19 km from my house, and one of these towns past by often and never stop by amazing !! Well I finally stop in town, Let me tell you on the Château de Pont Sal of Plougoumelen !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I,

The RN 165 expressway or voie express crosses the northern part of the town, which is served by the Kénéah road interchange, which allows via the D 101E to connect the town of Plougoumelen, which is away from this major traffic route, and of course, I passed by it often,,,,to filled up on gas/petrol !!! Another good portion of the town on its southern part connecting the town of Plougoumelen to Bono via the dike of the Kerlivio pond on the D101E. The road D 19, from Vannes to Sainte-Anne-d’Auray runs along the northern limit of the town, taken too. The train line from Paris to Quimper (passing by Vannes and Auray my stops) crosses the town in its northern part, but Plougoumelen does not have a train station, you have to go to the Auray or Vannes station to take the train.

The main monument to see here or visit is the Château de Pont-Sal, in 1400 which was the main lordship of Plougoumelen, belonged to Jacques de Pont-Sal, who had a son named Yves de Pont-Sal born in 1449, future bishop of the cathedral of Vannes, who had canonized Saint Vincent Ferrier in 1456 (see post). This prelate received Cardinal de Coëtivy who came from Rome to obtain the relics. He was vice-chancellor of the Duke of Brittany from 1451 to 1457, In 1536 the land of Pont-Sal, a small lordship of around 800 hectares, passed on to several persons, The current castle was built in 1785 in the neoclassical style of the era of Louis XVI by the Botherel de Quintin family. The castle is private property. Cannot be visited. However, Chateau De Pont-Sal is a Bed & Breakfast offering accommodation with free private parking. And yes double room almost 452 euros !

Other things to see here are The Lestreviau Chapel , the last chapel in the town of Plougoumelen. This chapel certainly existed before the 16C, probably in the 15C as evidenced by the small figures at the corners of the roof typical of the 15C. The current chapel dates from the 18C. It is dedicated to Saint Thuriau. Also, the Notre-Dame-de-Becquerel Chapel  located in the place of Becquerel on the road to Plougoumelen in the town of Le Bono (see this town post), however, for worship, the chapel is attached to the parish of Plougoumelen.

The Keroyal dolmens are two ruined dolmens located on the foreshore of the Bono river. The dolmens are erected near the place called Keroyal, in the territory of the town of Plougoumelen. The best preserved of the two monuments is a side cabinet dolmen, 8 meters long. The chamber measures 3.8 meters long and 2.6 to 3 meters wide; the access gallery measures 4.2 m by 0.9 meters; the side cabinet, 1.55 m by 1.18 meters. It is made up of 18 supports and a table covered with lichens, which would give it the name “roh-vilen” or yellow rock. The second monument, much more ruined, could be a covered walkway. 5.2 m long and 1.2 meters wide, only 8 supports and a table remain

A bit of history for a small town tell us that Mathurin Derian, rector of Plougoumelen since 1767, refused to take the oath of loyalty to the Civil Constitution of the clergy; dring the French revolution, he was a refractory priest, elderly, he escape to Spain, In May 1802 Chouan officers of the Auray legion then commanded by Vincent Hervé known as “La Joie”, from Plougoumelen; and Marc Le Guénégal, who lived in the manor of Kerdréan (now in Le Bono), was a member, they embarked clandestinely, some from Kerdrec’h, then in Plougoumelen (now in Le Bono), in the Auray estaury to the Channel Islands. In 1810 Abbot Joseph Le Leuch, former Chouan, defying the authority of the Bishop of Vannes and civil laws, transformed his cottage located in the hamlet of Cahire into the chapel of the Little Church, a schismatic Catholic movement refusing the Concordat.
