And my continuing road warrior trip back into our nostalgic Normandy, we visited two main towns and stayed between the two, perfect timing and location. We arrive to Etretat on the road D940 . Before entering the town per se we came for a peek of the Château des Aygues , a wonderful historical property !! I just had to take this peek and you will know why below. Hope you enjoy the post as I.
The Château des Aygues at rue Jacques Offenbach (road D940) was built in 1866 and owes its interest to the visits and stays made there in the 19C by the two queens of Spain, Maria Cristina de Bourbon-Sicilias, wife of Ferdinand VII, then Regent of Spain, and her daughter Isabel II, Queen of Spain with furniture and memorabilia from the reigning families of the 19C, including collections of Chinese porcelain. It was formerly the property of Prince Joseph Lubomirski (of House Lubomirski), Grand Chamberlain to Tsar Nicholas I of Russia and was built in the 19C, In 1880 he received in his house, then “Château Lubomirski” Queen Isabel II who rented the entire property for herself and her suite in August 1881.

The residence is representative of the “eclectic” seaside style of the Second Empire with three facades, each designed according to a specific inspiration of neo-Gothic facade, Italian facade, and neo-Louis XIII facade. The “Alphand-Davioud” style is characteristic of 19C taste, with its imposing and spectacular decoration of false rockeries.

It includes a greenhouse, an ice house, a gazebo overlooking the sea and the Étretat site. The park also conceals springs that gave the house its name in 1913, Les Aygues, In 1913, the house was acquired by Count Georges-Albert Puyou de Pouvourville, French officer, great specialist in the Far East and Taoism on which he wrote numerous works under the pseudonym of “Matgioi”. Today, the Château des Aygues is inhabited by the owners, but it is open to tourists for guided tours on specific dates,
