And my continuing road warrior trip back into our nostalgic Normandy, we visited two main towns and stayed between the two, perfect timing and location. We arrive to Etretat on the road D940 , and we headed for an off the beaten path monument off the main town just entering, Let me tell you about the Church Notre Dame de l’Assomption of Etretat! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Church Notre-Dame de l’Assomption at Avenue Nungesser et Coli located away from the center of the town. It is a large church compared to the importance of the town in the past, which can be explained by its former dependence on the powerful abbey of Fécamp. Its construction dates back to the 12C and 13C. It was remodeled in the 19C.

Essentially from the 12-13C, which saw the nave, the choir then the transept and the lantern tower appear. The church with a Latin cross plan, with projecting transept and flat apse. The body of the church is surrounded by a series of Romanesque corbels. Above the transept crossing rises a lantern tower on four pillars, characteristic of Norman and English Gothic styles. It is lit by eight lancet windows. The two levels of elevation of the nave are common in the Norman style.
The facade ,except the 19C tympanum as well as the first six bays of the nave are in the Romanesque style. The rest of the church was completed later, in Gothic style, The choir and side aisles are late 12C and early 13C; the transept was erected in the middle of the 13C The rectangular apse is hidden behind the sacristy which was added in the 19C. The lantern tower and its vignot staircase are typical of Gothic architecture. Soldiers of the Commonwealth, who died during the Great War or WWI, rest in part of the cemetery around the church. A military hospital was in fact operating in Étretat during this period. As you can see this is evident all around the church, RIP
