My personal curiosities of Nantes !!!

The region of the Pays de la Loire includes the departments of Loire-Atlantique, Maine-et-Loire, Mayenne, Sarthe, and Vendée with Nantes as its Capital and biggest city. It is one City we have gone a lot and love it, very much part of Bretagne And of course, the Loire river passes by here too, I like to show some older personal pictures as said, this blog is my life’s history, Therefore, here are my personal curiosities of Nantes !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

More than 1500 years of history are written around this St Peter and St Paul Cathedral of Nantes, from the first pre-Romanesque cathedrals to contemporary restorations. With it unfolds the story of the first Christian communities, the epic of the Dukes of Brittany and the awareness of the heritage value of a historic monument to be completed and protected. A huge monument for Bretagne/Brittany too.

It was owned by the city of Nantes from 1915, the castle has been used for tourist and museum use since 1924, You read right the castle of the Dukes of Brittany were here !!

What better way to use the Accor hotel chain and one its best the Mercure hotels. I took them there by car as also been there by train. The car ride is always smooth and the Mercure Centre Grand Hotel has an excellent underground parking garage that I use. From there easy walking all over lol! Located at 4 rue du Couedic is in the heart of Nantes city center In the heart of the pedestrian streets, the hotel allows you to reach the sites of the city in a few minutes on foot. The proximity of trams, buses and the train station facilitates travel to the airport Very convenient use for business and even with family trip to see more of Nantes !

We had our lunch at the Nota Bene pizzeria restaurant at 3 rue Saint Denis, just before getting into the feisty shopping paradise of the rue de Verdun. This was a nice service and food place and we really enjoy it, Nice family gathering and memories forever. My dear late wife Martine was always happy to eat out !!!

The Place Royale with a fountain representing the Loire and its tributaries, It is located in the city center of Nantes, was designed in 1786 and laid out in 1790 after the destruction of the medieval ramparts, it constitutes the central element of a homogeneous set of buildings responding to classical architecture built for the occasion . It has a monumental fountain inaugurated in 1865, this monumental fountain symbolizes Nantesriver and maritime vocation. Its pyramidal structure is made up of three superimposed granite basins, the one at ground level forming a square.

The wonderful passage Pommeraye is a magical place taking you into times past surrounded by chic boutiques and the area outside just magical as well. For me the best part of Nantes. We have come here often with the family,  The passage Pommeraye is a shopping mall in the city center of Nantes, built from the end of 1840, it is put into service on July 3, 1843 drawing its peculiarity to be built on a land with a steep gradient. It extends on three levels distributed by a central staircase. Sublime place for shopping and window shopping too !

One mentioned briefly in previous posts on Nantes but a very nice historical detail indeed, The Louis-XVI column was installed in the center of the place Maréchal-Foch. It is a column 28 meters high, placed on a pedestal, surmounted by a statue of the King of France Louis XVI. The statue represents the King Louis XVI “in the antique”, as a Roman emperor. In one hand he holds the staff of command, and in the other his will, in the form of a scroll. This statue is placed on a pedestal formed by a Doric column on a cubic base. The diameter of the column is 1.83 meters, The set is made of white stone, the statue of Louis XVI was inaugurated on August 14, 1823, The best in form of five others in France and one in USA (St Louis), For the history buff like me a wonderful thing to see !
