I have written briefly on the Théatre du Châtelet back on December 22 2018 but feels deserves more and since was by it why not another picture and more on it ok. Hope you enjoy the walk as I did, do always forever in Paris!

Ok ok ok, so much on it so many plays and operettas and musicals and so many famous over the times. I will let you find out when in Paris. For now briefly on the Théatre du Châtelet of Paris!

The Théâtre du Châtelet is located at Place du Châtelet in the 1éme arrondissement or district of Paris and inaugurated in 1862. Since 2017, it has been programming musicals, operas, classical concerts, jazz, recitals and dance. From 2002 to 2016, it hosted the Cesar Awards ceremony. The Théâtre du Châtelet is a member of RESEO (European Network for Opera and Dance Awareness).

A bit of history I like, just a bit ok ::)

The imperial theater of Châtelet was built between 1860 and 1862 by Gabriel Davioud at the request of Baron Haussmann, at the same time as the current Théâtre de la Ville facing it on the other side of the Place du Châtelet, built in the site of the former fortress of the Grand Châtelet, which served as a prison and court under the Ancien Régime, and was destroyed in 1808 during the reign of Emperor Napoleon 1st.

The theater had 2,500 seats and was used for theatrical performances. It iwas inaugurated on April 19, 1862, in the presence of the Empress Eugénie, with Rothomago d’Ennery, Clairville and Monnier. On its ceiling are nine cartridges, each containing one of the following words: dance, opera, fairy, music, drama, tragedy, comedy, vaudeville and pantomime.

At the beginning of the 20C, the theater’s programming began with operetta, ballet, concerts of classical and popular music, and even, for a while, cinematographic screenings. Dance in the 20C had a special place in programming By 1907, the theater had 3,600 seats.

From 1929, the theater of Châtelet will become the temple of operetta with great shows. In 1979, the management is taken over by the City of Paris, owner of the building. After a major renovation, it reopens in 1980 under the name of musical theater of Paris. Since 2002 and until 2016, the Théâtre du Châtelet has hosted the César awards ceremonies for cinema, succeeding the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. In 2017, the theater begins a period of work (2017-2019) renovation and upgrading.

And yes renovation was done ,finished back September 13 2019 and now gloriously open again. A bit on the renovations ok

At last, the curtain finally rose on the brand-new Theatre du Châtelet. After two and a half years of renovations, this legacy of the Second Empire, inaugurated in 1862 by the Empress Eugénie, was once again a great beauty in September 2019, and finally regains its former glory.

The  Grand Salle or great hall thus found its superb glazed ceiling and chandelier late 19C, while the paintings and gilding were restored and the armchairs soft and nice renovated. The Grand Foyer, where the public came to have a drink, also found its historical decor, restored according to the drawings of Davioud. It’s floral wallpaper and the two allegorical paintings representing Music and Poetry have regained their brilliance, sublimated by a natural light that has not yet penetrated its walls: the five oculi overlooking the Galerie Josephine Baker , which overlooks the Place du Châtelet, have indeed been opened. Between the Grand Foyer and the Great Hall, the vestibule has also been extensively renovated, giving it a much brighter and more welcoming appearance than before. the “resurrection” of the four allegorical statues (Dance, Drama, Comedy and Music) which enthroned again at the top of the Châtelet facade: their disappearance at the end of the 19C has always remained a mystery; today they are reproduced identically thanks to historical iconography and period photographic documents. Wonderful indeed !

Go see it for its history, for its wonderfully renovated architecture and of course if time for a play in real Parisian style. Enjoy the Théatre du Châtelet of Paris of course.
