Curiosities of Vannes , part XXX !!!

As said, we come by here always, we eat here , enjoy it here ,ride boats here, and do shopping galore on many items yet I need to tell you more, with new pictures from my latest round in town always here but sometimes need to tell you more for you and me, I will tell you a bit more on favorites spots in my capital City of Vannes,  in my beautiful  Morbihan  dept 56, in my lovely Bretagne,  and in my belle France. Therefore, here again the curiosities of Vannes , part XXX !!! Hope you enjoy it as I

The Saint Peter’s Cathedral (see posts) is a wonderful building right in the middle of the old town with wooden houses going back to the 14C originals! I walk by it every so often, several times a week, and always amazed of it’s history and impressive architecture in the right spot.  Many towns have wonderful Churches, Basilicas, and Cathedrals ;usually they are laid out in a square with spaces around them. Not so, Vannes, the Cathedral is right in the town on a street really call place St Pierre attached by houses and shops all around it  in a medieval setting.  In the 15C , it was visited by Saint Vincent (Vicente Ferrier a Dominican monk from Valencia Spain) ; his tomb is in the Cathedral on the left side on the Tour Renaissance. The Cathédrale Saint-Pierre receives her parishioners for a last mass this Sunday, January 5, 2025, before starting a new phase of works which will be spread out until 2027.

The Musée d’Histoire et Archeologie de Vannes or the Museum of History and Archeology in the wonderful Castle of Gaillard!. The former hotel of the Parliament of Brittany or Château-Gaillard,(voir poste) is a former mansion located at 2 Rue Noé . Built in the early 15C, Château-Gaillard has been hosting the city’s History and Archaeology Museum since 2000.  The street level room opens to the garden connecting it with the Hôtel de Roscanvec.

The Hôtel de Roscanvec initially was probably built at the end of the 17C, between 1677 and 1690, for Jean Macéot de Roscanvec who gave it his name, the hotel stands on the foundations of an old house mentioned in the ducal rentier of 1455. From this period, it still retains a very beautiful fireplace inside and shows the mark of these transformations at the level of the exterior openings of the ground floor. The large main building extends onto the courtyard set back from the street, but the partial irregularity of the bays perhaps reflects the legacy of the constructions of the end of the 15C of which the fireplace and the south door are the remains. It is now a prestigious hotel restaurant located at 17 rue des halles, with large bay window overlooking the garden, the large room bears witness to a charming minimalism, both bright and zen, which sets the mood for discovering new ideas, but always Breton.

The Fine Arts Museum (beaux-arts) of Vannes known as  La Cohue (see post) is located at Place St Pierre and also a back entrance on lovely rue des Halles. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Vannes or Museum of Fine Arts of Vannes or aka La Cohue was created in 1982, is one of the museums of the city of Vannes. The permanent space also gives a beautiful space to the works of the late 19C and the beginning of the 20C. You will find here as well a collection of polychrome wood sculptures from the 14C and 16C. Set of 18C goldsmith’s pieces, furniture and decorative art objects, and 19-20C prints collection. The museum relocation project has been delayed. Based in La Cohue for over forty years, the museum was due to move to the Château de l’Hermine (see post) before the end of 2025, after renovation of the building and construction of an extension in the courtyard. However, discoveries made during preventive archaeological excavations have delayed the start of the work and require a rethink of the construction of the future museum. Many old archeological fragments have been found there awaiting the completion for full details.
