The Chapelle Sainte Barbe of La Faouët !!!

This is Le Faouët in my beautiful Morbihan dept 56 of the lovely region of Bretagne, and in my belleFrance. Once, again, found me older pictures in my cd rom vault ,not yet in my blog and they should be, Do see/read my other posts on the town. Therefore, let me tell you about the Chapelle Sainte Barbe of La Faouët !!! Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The Chapelle Sainte Barbe is 178 meters above sea level on a platform on the side of the cliff of Roc’h ar Marc’h Bran (literally the (rock of the horse crow), animals of Celtic mythology suggesting on this site a cult which dates back to a prechretian era, perhaps in connection with the Fontaine in Devotion, overhanging the torrential course of the Ellé river ,100 meters below. It was built from the 16C to the 18Cy, the main works being carried out from 1489 to 1512. According to local legend, it is the result of the wish of a Lord of Locmalo, Jean de Toulbodou, who, taken in a storm at this place during a hunt, promised to build a place of worship in Sainte Barbe if he escaped lightning, at the place where a huge block would stop tumbled towards him , The access to the chapel is by a monumental Renaissance style staircase, dating from 1700, made up of a system of four ramps on the cruciform plane and decorated with Louis XIII style balusters a bridge supported by an arc in full, giving access to the Saint-Michel oratory , chapel in granite built on a rocky spur, The large staircase of 78 steps leads to an ossuary fitted out in a relevance of the rocky wall with the facade of this ossuary is inserted in the retaining wall and pierced with a door and three twinned berries, then with the flamboyant Gothic style chapel.

The choir close of wrought iron produced in the 18C, of convex plan in the center and right on the sides, has a central gate. It is decorated with nuclei rollers with seed pistils and interlacing from C and S to scrolls. Under the altar is visible the recumbent of Sainte Barbe, Four of the stained glass windows of the chapel date from the first quarter of the 16C and evoke life , and the death of Sainte Barbe, of the transfiguration, of the Ascension, and Pentecost. The chapel is home to many sculpted wooden statues as well as maritime ex-voto. Nearby is a Campanile which houses the pilgrims who, according to local legend, scares lightning. Traditionally, each pilgrim makes her ring when he arrives in order to attract the blessings of the sky, but many visitors also have fun ringing her , The chapel is still the place of forgiveness, held on the last Sunday in June and December 4, the day of the Sainte Barbe, and attracting many faithful, especially during the great dangers (world wars) or to cure neurological diseases ( fears, anxieties). In addition, she is Santa Barbara, the patron Saint of my native town,(see post),

A path leads to the fountain of devotion. This one, dating from 1708, is housed in a square enclosure with an interior bench. A niche houses a statue of Sainte Barbe (Santa Barbara). According to legend, young unmarried girls would throw a round-headed pin into it while trying to reach the orifice pierced in the basin of the fountain to find out if they would marry within the year. Continuing on the path, you reach the banks of the Ellé river The Chapelle Sainte-Barbe is about a km of the town. A way on one of the Breton paths from/to the pilgrimage to Saintiago de Compostela, and sanctuary attracting many faithful during the forgiveness of Sainte Barbe (Santa Barbara).
