Hope you enjoy the post as I. The Île-aux-Moines island is located in my beautiful dept 56 of Morbihan in my lovely region of Bretagne, and in my belle France. It consists of the island in the monks, the largest island in the Gulf of Morbihan, the islands of Creïzic, Holavre, and the two islands of Brouel. The main is 6 km long and 3.5 km wide for an area of 310 ha, You can there by boat serving all the port of the Lério with the main connection, towards Port-Blanc in Baden (see post), it is operated by the private company Izenah cruises with other connections offered in tourist season only: to Vannes gare maritime; towards Larmor-Baden ,cale de Pen Lanic or Locmariaquer ar cale du Guilvin and to Arzon at Port-Navalo or Bilouris at Cale in Kerner, The Church Saint-Michel was built in 1802; It was enlarged three times thereafter in 1871, 1902 and 1931, It has some ex-votos to Sainte Anne. It also has an ancient wooden statue, a bust of Saint Vincent Ferrier, which was originally in the cathedral of Vannes, but had been abandoned, whose transfer into the island from the continent in 1780 and was restored in 1902. Ile aux Moines chapelle Saint Michel front c2009 A bit of history tell us that in 1792, it became a town under the French revolution name of Isle du Morbihan, In 1887 a delegation of the royalists of Vannes, Arradon, Plescop, Sarzeau, Theix, Île-aux-Moines and Saint-Avé went to Jersey island to meet the Count of Paris who was there in exile, The first mention of the existence of the Kergonan Cromlech dates from 1827 there remain 24 of the 36 menhirs deducted in 1877; They are now forming a horseshoe -shaped enclosure (96 meters opening and 70 meters deep); The biggest is nicknamed “le moine” because his appearance makes him look a little like a monk , The first manor of du Guéric was mentioned for the first time in 1532 ,an Irish family immigrant in France during the exodus of James II (probably at the Battle of the Boyne in 1690) built the Guéric country house, bringing with it two statues of the Virgin Mary, one of which is still in the chapel of the Guéric, the other being transported to Hennebont. The current castle would have been built by the family of Guillo du Bodan at the end of the 18C The official Île aux Moines on its heritage : https://www.mairie-ileauxmoines.fr/histoire-patrimoine/ The local Gulf of Morbihan tourist office on the Île aux Moines : https://www.golfedumorbihan.co.uk/explore/live-the-exceptional/sea/the-gulf-islands/ile-aux-moines/ The Morbihan dept 56 tourist office on Île aux Moines : https://morbihan.com/decouvrir/le-morbihan-et-ses-perles-bretonnes/destination-iles-du-morbihan/ile-aux-moines/ The Île d’Arz is located in the Gulf of Morbihan off Vannes, in my beautiful dept 56 of Morbihan in my lovely region of Bretagne of my belle France. It constitutes one of the eight islands and islets of the town called Île-d’Arz. With its 16 km of coastal trails (reserved for pedestrians), its bicycle circuit, its magnificent beaches, the Ile d’Arz with its 330 hectares is the “nature” island par excellence. It is the paradise of hikers, nature lovers with always at the end of the road a pretty beach, a pretty village. But be aware that the town is more than 2 km from the landing , and that there is no ticket distributor … A advice (in season) if you want to have lunch in one of the restaurants of the island: book in advance! In addition, there is no shortage of picnic corners. Arz Island, like all islands, is a fragile territory, bikes are not welcome on the coastal path; Nordic walking enthusiasts, do not forget that the metal tips are strictly prohibited, This former priory dependent on the Saint-Gildas abbey in Rhuys, now houses the city hall and the school. The Church of Nativity of Notre-Dame celebrated is over a thousand years old. You can observe sculpted sand pits and a beam to numb. Its acoustics are remarkable, and its organ, recently restored, is of exceptional quality. Located south of the island, the bois de Lious megalithic site is made up of the remains of a dolmen and a circular enclosure. It testifies to life on the island of men in the Neolithic. You have several landings slips here such as the cale de Penera, near the City center, to go to the Rhuys peninsula on which the priory of the Arz island depended. Also, the Mounien’s to go to île aux Moines or to Arradon.,and Béluré to go to Roguedas or Vannes. Nicknamed the “Grenats Island”, it is at the mouth of the Lorient harbor and in front of Ploemeur (see posts). It is accessible by boat from Lorient, Port-Louis and the port of Doëlan (in Clohars-Carnoët). The island is 8 km long and 3 km wide (maximum) with a contrasting landscape between the West the “piwisy” characterized by high cliffs (pen-men) cut with deeply cashed valleys, and is the ” Primiturey ” characterized by low cliffs, beaches and a large rocky platier (Pointe des Chats, Port de Locmaria). Île de Groix blue thé et ecumé des jours c2009 Some of the things to see here me think are the Saint-Tudy Church (17C and 19C) (in large part rebuilt in 1850) in the town, whose patron is Saint Tudy. This church has the particularity having a tuna as a weather vane in place of the rooster or the Notre-Dame-de-Placemanec arrow ( 17C) in Locmaria. This chapel, burnt down in 1696, was rebuilt in 1734. It had a statue of the Virgin hidden in 1696 and again in 1793 to save it from the looting. Megaliths (menhirs and dolmens): the big menhir of Kermario, the lying menhir “bag sant tudi” or “vag saint tudy”; menhir de mez-kerlard, dolmens called men cam and men yann, dolmen dit de Vagoua r-Huen, The eco -museum of the Île de Groix, which opened in 1984, traces, according to the principles of an eco -museum, the history of the island of Groix and its inhabitants. The Gallic camp at Pointe de Kervédan is a hacked spur on the site occupied by the pointe or tip of the castle of Kervédan, It dates from the Iron Age, probably from the 1C BC. The main thing to come to this island is the beautiful beaches that makes you think you are in my temperate climates (in Summer of course); such as the main beach of the island offers several interesting aspects: it is convex, phenomenon which would be unique in Europe ,it moves very quickly and it consists of two sands of different colors. Its convex shape is due to two sea currents, the northwest coming, the other from the southwest, which run along the island on its two north and southern coasts and which drosses the sands at their meeting point, The plage de Locmaria beach is facing south, it is protected by a bay. It is very easily accessed. services and shops are nearby. You can rent kayaks for a ride around the island or a fishing outing. This beach is monitored in July and August. The Notre-Dame-de-Placemanec Chapel, which dated from the 11C, was burned down by the Anglo-Hollanders in 1696 and was rebuilt in 1734. The old parish Church Saint-Tudy de Groix was built in 1755 but because of the difficulties financial, the foundation stone of the new church was not laid down until July 30, 1758; Poorly constructed, the new church threatened ruin in 1787, forcing to organize religious services in the chapel of the Trinity. It was necessary to rebuild it largely in 1850. The Pen Men lighthouse, built for the first time in 1791, was rebuilt between 1835 and 1839 at the western tip of Groix. The East Pointe Lighthouse, was put into service in 1897, the Fire de la Croix in 1898, the Birvideaux Balise Tour in 1934. The semaphores of Grognon and Nostreven entered service in 1806, that of Beg Melen in 1881, another existing at Croix (cross). A first pier was built in 1792 in Port Tudy, replaced from the 1860s by a 115 -meter long mole, completed by two throws, one of 155 meters, the other of 193 meters; It was not until 1935, with the extension of the northwest pier, that the port is finally completely protected , Port Tudy constitutes the largest fishing and pleasure port on the island. It hosts the shuttle (ferry) which makes the connection between the island and the continent (Lorient and Port-Louis). Locmaria remained until around 1880 the most populous village in Groix. Nestled at the bottom of a bay on the south coast, it is only a wearing of stranding, frequentable only in good weather in good season a pier was finally built in 1905, A excavation undertaken in 1906 by the prehistorian Paul du Châtellier and the commander Louis Le Pontois allowed the discovery of a coal area of a Scandinavian burial by incineration in and with a boat. Only a few elements are visible today at the Ecomuseum of Groix, a few others are kept at the Museum of National Antiquities in Saint-Germain-en-Laye (78 see post), There is an old sailors’ saying here on the conditions of the sea around the Île de Groix, “Who sees Ouessant sees his blood, Who sees Molène, sees his sentence, Who sees Sein, sees his end, Who sees Groix, sees his cross.” Île de Groix port Tudy quais c2009 A bit of history I like tell us that at the time of the forays of the Vikings, the relics of Saint Gunthier, Saint Guénolé and saints Paulennan, Symphorien, Trénennan, Guédian, Guénael, Isunet ,and other saints were hidden in Groix. They were rediscovered around 1069, Groix belonged to the Kemenet-Héboé, Machtiernat, then lordship centered in Hennebont, who will then pass to the Rohan family, until the French revolution. It was not until 1744 that a first defensive structure was built on Fort Surville Island (Pointe de la Croix): built in 1744, enlarged in 1846; Fort of Bas-Grognon: built in 1744, modified in 1761, 1848 and 1893; and Fort du Haut-Grognon: Built from 1878 to 1881, The Dundee Gloire, built in 1910, was sunk by a German submarine in 1917, Foreign citizens, including Alsatians-Lorraine, were interned in Forts Surville and Haut-Grognon during the Great War or WWI, On June 19, 1940, the trawler patrolling La Tanche, with more than 200 people on board fleeing the Nazi advance, jumped on a mine in the Coureaux de Groix; Only a dozen people were saved. On August 12, 1943, five British and Australian airmen died during the crash of their bombardier on the Ile de Groix, at a place called Quéhello, during a mission of mines on Saint-Nazaire. A commemorative stele was put in the spot of the accident. The airmen are buried in the military square of the Guidel cemetery, In 1965, Portuguese fleeing the Salazar regime were hired to build a dam in Groix. Their living conditions were difficult, but some of them, with their families, stayed on the island after the end of the site, settled there as building craftsmen The official Île de Groix on its heritage : https://www.groix.fr/?mode=patrimoine_historique_culturel The local Lorient south Brittany tourist office on Île de Groix : https://www.visit-lorient-brittany.com/unmissable/island-of-groix/ The Morbihan dept 56 tourist office on Île de Groix : https://morbihan.com/decouvrir/le-morbihan-et-ses-perles-bretonnes/destination-iles-du-morbihan/ile-de-groix/ There you go folks, a dandy area to explore and enjoy with the family, Memorable moments in my belle France, going by ferry boat all over in my road warrior trails brings out sublime awesome spots with nice memorable family visits of yesteryear always remember and always looking forward to be back, eventually.
