This is Nogent sur Seine !!!

More in my road warrior trails of my belle France, I came to Nogent sur Seine, I have found pictures in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me,  I was here with the family, and have a pleasant memory of visiting this nice town with history and architecture to enjoy by all. Therefore, this is my take on this is Nogent sur Seine !!! Hope you enjoy this post as I.

The town of Nogent sur Seine is located in the Aube department no 10 in the Grand Est region of my belle France. The town is bisected by the Seine river. Two canals have been added to the river, creating two islands. One of them, called Île Olive, is entirely wooded and landscaped for walking. The other island is connected to the banks by two old bridges. The islands are linked by the “déversoir,” a long weir spanned by a footbridge. The town is 43 km from Sens, 52 km from Troyes, 82 km from Meaux , 93 km from Epernay, and 136 km from Versailles, When we came on our road warrior trails we did it from Meaux (native town of my dear late wife Martine);taking the A140 highway to connect with the A4 autoroute de l’Est dir Paris continue to exit/Sortie 15 dir Melun on the D1036 road but at the obelisk roundabout bear left onto the D231 road dir Provins at roundabout bear right and continue on the D619 road going around Provins continue on the D619 road go thru City center Sourdun and continue on the D619 road at roundabout bear left dir Nogent sur Seine onto the D951 road or Route de Bray continue turn left on Rue Jules Ferry becoming Rue François Bachimont to the place de la Halle (market on your left side) turn right onto Rue des Fossés, and then quick left onto place de l’église and the church,

The Church of Saint-Laurent was built in several stages during the 15C and 16C on a rectangular plan and has a five-sided apse. The five-bay nave was begun in 1500. The church received the ashes of Héloïse d’Argenteuil and Pierre Abélard when they were removed from the Paraclete in 1792, before their transfer to the Musée des Monuments Français in Paris in 1800 and then to Père-Lachaise Cemetery in 1817. It is adorned with sculptures by Ramus, Paul Dubois, and Alfred Boucher. Its organ and its tower, admired by Louis XIV, make it a very interesting monument. It houses a 15C statue of the Virgin and Child, as well as numerous paintings. The chapel dedicated to Saint Syre was built by the Pougoise family and later used by the Angenoust family, who acquired it through marriage.

Other things to see here with more time are the Chapel of the Hôtel-Dieu, Chapel of the Dieu-de-Pitié of Faubourg Bechereau, Chapel Saint-Roch, Chapel Saint-Vinebaut, Chapel of the God of Mercy, The bridges of the Paris-Basel Royal Road. The Paul-Dubois – Alfred Boucher Museum, founded in 1902 by Alfred Boucher: archaeology, painting, and sculpture. The Hôtel de Valville, originally built in the 17C, was destroyed in 1814 during Napoleon I’s French Campaign. After being moved several times, it was finally housed in the Hôtel de Valville, built in the 18C. Today, civil and municipal ceremonies are held there, and for nearly 15 years, temporary exhibitions, primarily contemporary works by local artists, have been held there in December. The market hall, destroyed in the 18C, was not replaced, and the market had to be held on the Grande Rue Saint-Laurent. After numerous protests, the market hall was built in 1851, near the Seine river. The 17C Maison Claudel house was home to the family of Paul and Camille Claudel, who lived there for three years. Camille, around twelve years old, took sculpture lessons there from Ramus and Alfred Boucher. When Boucher left for Italy, he entrusted her to his friend Auguste Rodin in Paris. A museum dedicated to Camille Claudel has been open there since March 2017.

A bit of history I like tell us that the town belongs to the diocese of Troyes and borders the diocese of Sens. The Royal Abbey of Saint-Denis owned the land; in 862, Charles the Bald recognized this ownership. The Count of Champagne became the sole lord around 1190. In 1222, the royal abbey of Saint-Denis held suzerainty over the area, and the lords owed them homage, confirmed in 1473 by a decree of the Parliament of Paris against the Duke of Nemours. There was already a castle in Nogent, first mentioned in 1226, although the Counts of Champagne made it a residence in 1189. The Dukes of Nemours had a castle, the same one where, in the St. John Chapel, the marriage of Marguerite d’Armagnac to Pierre de Rohan-Gié was celebrated. It is mentioned again in 1713 during the auction of Nogent to Marshal de Noailles. On June 23, 1359, a battle took place near Nogent-sur-Seine between the Bishop of Troyes, Henry of Poitiers, and the Anglo-Navarrese led by Eustache d’Abrichecourt. The latter was defeated. The lordship was pledged to the Capetian family of Navarre-Évreux, and later to their descendants, Bourbon-La Marche and Armagnac. As Dukes of Nemours, the town of Nogent was coveted by generals of all sides maneuvering during the civil wars. The town was captured by the Protestants and ravaged. Military aid was provided to it by Provins, it burned largely in 1550. The town is particularly known for the Battle of Nogent, which pitted the armies of Napoleon and Württemberg against each other during the French campaign of 1814. On October 25, 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War, the Battle of Nogent took place, in which the 84th Provisional Regiment was engaged, composed of the National Guards Mobiles of Morbihan (my dept 56) ,and Indre, the Francs-Tireurs of the Loire and the Battalion of Volunteer Scouts of Aube.
