Curiosities of Le Port Marly !!

And here I am again to show you more pictures found in my cd rom vaults that should be in my blog for you and me, I have to tell you a bit more on Le Port Marly, This is heavens ,history, architecture and good views all over. I passed by it and gone into the castle but there are other things to see here indeed. The town of Le Port-Marly is located in my former home, the Yvelines department 78 in the Île-de-France region of my belle France. The town is located 11 km from Versailles, 3 km from Saint-Germain-en-Laye and 20 km from Paris.  Therefore, here is my take on curiosities of Le Port Marly !!  Hope you enjoy the post as I.

A wonderful natural walk from City center Le Port Marly to the île de la Loge island on the Seine river on the passerelle de Port Marly a pedestrian and cycle bridge using an impressive telescopic crane, This was inaugurated last Saturday, May 20, 2017, Locals and visitors will find, among other things, a 6-hectare wooded park with play areas for children. It offers a fitness trail allowing you to discover playful groves, a large meadow, equipped with a public toilet, benches (for lunch…), not forgetting the water fountain, so you can fully enjoy a relaxing day in a privileged space.

The link between the Seine river and Le Port-Marly is tight/close. As proof, the towpath is now being modernized. You take in the view of the city and its many barges, the Île de la Loge, La Défense , Mont Valérien, Le Pecq , the Terrasse de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, as well as Louveciennes and Bougival. In all a wonderful walk amongst history of the Impressionists painters of all time !

The Île de la Loge is an island in the Seine river, approximately 2.5 km long, located between Le Port-Marly, Louveciennes, and Bougival (see posts) on the left bank, and Croissy-sur-Seine (see post) on the right bank. This island is connected to the left bank by a road bridge, called the Pont Abbé Pierre, located near its upstream end, and by a pedestrian footbridge,(see above) located near its downstream end, linking it to Le Port-Marly. The island was originally made up of several small islands separated by ditches. The Île au Ratz, the Île de la Falaise Normande, and the Île Moreau were attached to the Grande Loge. These ditches were filled in over time, and in 1664, all these islands merged into a single island, which became known as the Île de la Loge. L’île Poirée, downstream, remained detached until the construction of the Machine de Marly in 1683. It was in the arm of the Seine located between this island and the left bank, near Louveciennes, that a dam was built in the 17C to allow the installation of the Machine de Marly, (see post) designed to supply the palaces of Versailles and Marly with water from the Seine river.

The Île de la Loge is one of the places that inspired the Impressionists, notably Sisley, who depicted it in numerous paintings: The Ferry of the Île de la Loge, Flood (1872, Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek), The Ferry of the Île de la Loge (1872, private collection), The Machine de Marly Dam (1873, private collection), The Island of La Grande Jatte (1873, inaccurate title, Musée d’Orsay), Banks of the Seine at Port-Marly (1875, inaccurate title, Art Institute of Chicago). The island is home to, among other things, the Emmaüs Bougival community of Port-Marly and the Banque de France Sports and Leisure Centre. The latter also housed the training centre of the PSG women’s team from 2012, which was succeeded by FC Versailles in July 2023.
