This another of the Norman towns we criss cross on our road warrior trails, passing and marking a spot in my world. We came as I read about the castle and took a detour, worth it me think, very nice find. I found me a picture in my cd rom vault that made me do this post for you and me, Therefore, let me tell you a bit on this is Mézidon-Canon !!  Hope you enjoy the post as I.

The former town of Mézidon-Canon is now merged in 2017 into the new town of Mézidon Vallée d’Auge, located in the Calvados department no 14 in the Normandie region,and in my belle France, The town is 29 km from Falaise, 28 km from Lisieux, 31 km from Caen, 31 km from Cabourg, 215 km from Versailles, and 316 from my current home from where we came in my road warrior trails around Caen, taking first the N24 around the N136 rocade of Rennes and continuing on the A84 highway dir Caen ,by exit/sortie 29 Fougéres took the N12 dir Fougéres/Ernée then before entering the City bear left on the D706 Fougéres rocade 0 then bear right onto the D155 Flers/Fougéres or Bd de la Motelle, continue becoming Bd Saint Germain to next roundabout bear left onto the D798 dir Flers then on next roundabout bear left then quick right follow panel dir Flers on the D177 avenue de la Verrerie continue past City center Landéan bear right continue on the D19 road which same road becomes the D122 road going thru cith center Landivy and continue same road continue thru cith center Fougerolles-du-Plessis bearing left on rue de Normandie or D116 road then by Le Poteau bear right back onto the D122 road continue again same road changes to D36 road or La Grafardiére continue road becomes the Rue de Fougerolles ,then bear right onto the D976 road or Route de Saint Hilaire continue to town center Le Teilleul on Rue du Maine bearing right on Rue Guillaume Morel or D976 road again continue long on same road passing Saint Mars d’Egrenne continue passing by town center Domfront en Poiraie continue bear left on Rue du Maréchal Joffre or D908 road and on next roundabout bear left onto the D21 road continue long on this road passing by town center Dompierre continuing on same road passing by town center of La Ferrière-aux-Étangs continue same road passing by town center Briouze bearing right on Rue de Falaise and get on the D924 road then bear left on Route de Fromentel or D909 road continue passing by town center Putanges-le-Lac and continue on the D509 road just before Falaise bear left onto the D658A to connect on exit/sortie 11 with the N158 highway passing the town of Falaise continue bearing right onto the exit/sortie Soumont Saint Quentin passing town center of this town and continue on D91A road bearing left on the Church Saint Pierre de Maziéres then bearing right onto the D91 road then bear right onto the Rue des Carriéres which becomes the D239 road passing by town center of Condé sur Ifs where bearing right take the D152 road or Rue du Pasteur and into avenue du Château and the castle, Reminder I do scenic routes so you with a gps might get a more straight route,

The Château de Canon is a castle which stands on the territory of the former town of Mézidon-Canon. The park and gardens are in the Franco-English style, and the château follows the so-called “Italian” model. The entrance gate as well as the Chinese kiosk, bought by Jean-Baptiste Élie de Beaumont in 1781 from the architect Nicolas Lenoir, come from the former Château des Ternes in Paris, The balustrade adorned with fire pots, fireplaces, projecting section, north wing of the outbuildings; Parks with numerous follies, including a Chinese pavilion, the Temple of the Weeping Woman, a dovecote, and walled orchards connected by arched bays. The castle gardens are listed as remarkable gardens, notably thanks to the thirteen walled gardens, called “chartreuses,” which serve as settings for hundreds of flower varieties and are open to the public. The lordship of Canon, owned in the Middle Ages by Eudes de Canon, then passed through a series of alliances and inheritances, notably to the Franqueville and Sarcilly families, and then to Jean Le Sueur, who around 1610 probably built the Château Bérenger, a remnant of the first Château de Canon.

Other things to see here with more time are the Church of Notre-Dame de Mézidon (19C): neo-antique style altarpiece, 18C console, 15C statue of Saint Barbara. Church of Saint-Médard de Canon partly 12C and 13C: 18C altarpiece, 17C Christ, tombstone of Pierre Lemonier, “first good old man crowned” (1777), curious reminder of the “virtue” coronations practiced by the lords of Canon in the 18C, baptismal font18C.

A bit of history I like tell us the town originated from the merger, over time, of several villages. Canon, a village governed by priests, was one of the strongholds used by Odon Stigand to build a strategic fortress on the banks of the Dives river, at the request of William, Duke of Normandy, in 1050. Odon established a barony around this fortress and became the first Baron of Mézidon. Around 1050, upon returning from a crusade, he founded Mézidon. Built in the 17C, the first castle was destroyed and then rebuilt in the 18C by Jean-Baptiste-Jacques Élie de Beaumont and displays a blend of classical and English styles. The town of Mézidon was awarded the Croix de Guerre 1939-1945 by decree of November 11, 1948 for acts of resistance in WWII. It was added to the town’s coat of arms….
