I drove by this street as well as walked all over, for several years, The area having wonderful historical monuments if still some off the beaten path trail of my eternal Paris, such as this museum, that brings back many memories from my maternal grandfather who was a hunter with dogs way back ! This is my luck to find me pictures in my cd rom vault that should be in my blog for you and me. Therefore, let me tell you about the Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature of Paris !!! Hope you enjoy this post as I.
The Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature or Museum of Hunting and Nature is a private museum housing the collections of the François-Sommer Foundation for Hunting and Nature, and presenting temporary exhibitions, often of contemporary art. It is located in Paris, in the Hôtel de Guénégaud and the Hôtel de Mongelas in the Marais quartier or neighborhood of the 4éme district or arrondissement of Paris. François and Jacqueline Sommer established the Foundation for Hunting and Nature in 1964, one of whose objectives was the creation of a museum. Through André Malraux, then Minister of Cultural Affairs (and also a friend of François Sommer), the Hôtel de Guénégaud and the Hôtel de Mongelas were entrusted to the Foundation, which was responsible for their rehabilitation, restoration, and maintenance. The collections are divided between two sites: the Hôtel de Guénégaud (designed by François Mansart) and the Hôtel de Mongelas, 17-18C mansions; and the second floor of the Château de Chambord,(see posts) where, since 1971, the Foundation has displayed part of its collections of paintings, tapestries, and contemporary art.

Inaugurated by André Malraux in the Hôtel de Guénégaud on February 21, 1967, the Museum of Hunting and Nature was expanded in 2007 to include the neighboring Hôtel de Mongelas. Thanks to this renovation and expansion, the museum showcases the relationship between humans and animals throughout history ,from Antiquity to the present day, drawing on the exceptional collections of ancient, modern, and contemporary art assembled by its founders and continuously growing for nearly half a century. A living museum, the home of an aesthete and collector, the Museum of Hunting and Nature, has, in recent years, under the guidance of Claude d’Anthenaise, its curator for 23 years, shifted its focus from hunting to exploring the relationship between humans and animals throughout history. The deliberately unique museography brilliantly blends genres within the majestic historical setting of the museum. The Guénégaud and Mongelas mansions have been combined. Since the first renovation in 2007, temporary exhibitions have provided numerous opportunities for invited contemporary artists to engage with the space and the rich and varied collections.

The permanent collections, comprising a collection of artworks such as paintings, drawings, sculptures, rugs, tapestries, goldsmithing, ceramics, weapons, trophies, armor, furniture, objets d’art, installations, photographs, videos, etc. are presented in an original museography that combines the artworks with taxidermied animals and interpretive elements. Conceived as a belvedere opening onto the natural world, the museum allows visitors right in the heart of Paris to experience animals in their natural environment. This approach remains true to the spirit envisioned by the founders: that of an “art lover’s home.” Exhibitions are renewed two to three times a year and are accessible to all audiences at no extra cost. From the outset, temporary exhibitions offer a unique and complementary perspective on the permanent collections. While they contribute to enriching the human-animal relationship by featuring contemporary artists , some also provide historical and artistic context. Through these exhibitions, a specific cultural experience is offered to the public .
