The abreuvoir de Marly !!!

Lots of history here, and lots of memories visiting and riding once living in Versailles. It has been a while and perhaps nostalgic will bring out more . This is thanks to finding new pictures in my cd rom vaults that should be in my blog for you and me, Do see my other posts on this wonderful town, The town of Marly le Roi,is in the Yvelines dept 78, of the Île de France region of my belle France. The abreuvoir de Marly or the Marly watering trough is a structure located within and below the domaine national de Marly-le-Roi.(see post), It was a favorite subject of the painter Alfred Sisley, whose canvases depicting the trough are considered a series of Impressionist masterpieces. The Abreuvoir à Marly-Le-Roi, gelée blanche or the Watering Trough white frost at Marly-le-Roi is a painting by Alfred Sisley from 1876. L’Abreuvoir de Marly, or the Watering Trough at Marly, 1875 now shown at the Art Institute of Chicago USA, and L’Inondation à Port-Marly or the Flood at Port-Marly are two series of Impressionist masterpieces. Alfred Sisley lived in Marly-le-Roi from 1874 to 1877, in a rented house at no 2 Avenue de l’Abreuvoir.

A first watering trough was built on this site in 1687 and then enlarged in 1698 to give it its current form. In 1702, the sculptures of Mercury on Pegasus and Fame on Pegasus by Antoine Coysevox were installed at the southern corners of the basin. In 1745, at the request of Louis XV, Guillaume Coustou created the Horses of Marly to replace Mercury and Fame, which had been moved to the Tuileries Palace in 1719. These same marble horses have since been replaced by replicas and have joined the originals by Coysevox in the Louvre.

The watering trough consists of two basins: the upper section with three jets, and the lower section, which slopes gently from the road to allow horses to drink there. It is supplied with water from the park’s fountains. The water flows from the upper section to the lower section via cascading jets. The retaining walls are decorated with rockwork and seashells. From the park, the watering trough is only visible when you reach the level of the terrace overlooking it. The upper part of the watering trough was partially restored in 2005, but the water jets were not reinstated. The walls were decorated with rockwork. Seashells from the Antilles were attached to the wall with wire. Some of these shells were deposited in the Natural History Museum. Some of the stone markers came from the watering trough in Saint-Germain-en-Laye.

Then, move to Perth Amboy ,New Jersey USA (living there 13 yrs) ; where I completed high school, became a US Citizen, learned to drive a car, and learned English. Afterward, went to the university in Florida, ERAU, and upon graduation decided to moved there to Ormond by the Sea, near Daytona Beach, finally moving North Miami, then Hialeah, then another moved to Silver Lakes division in Miramar, Broward county, Florida; in Florida I lived a total of 18 years. Finally , moved to France in 2003 ,Versailles call me for its royalty, and working in Paris was great. It was time to seek frontiers again and moved to Brech near Auray, Morbihan in Brittany , and later move to not too far Pluvigner. Total so far in France has been 20 years, and counting.
